Well, he got his first introduction to losing to Wisconsin at least. Apparently he liked it.

he has a record breaking senior QB and one of the top WRs in all of college football ... both aren't going to be back
his stock will never be higher and could be significantly lower after next year .... get what you can

IMO you are dead wrong. He just killed his chance of getting a really good job in the near future. He won't win very big there and fade away or get fired. Stupid move.

I get that it might not be a great (or even good) gig...but if he can go sign a deal for like 5 years 9 million dollars...well that is all guaranteed money, he is set, forever.

My first reaction is to agree that he's jumping too soon for a mediocre job. But if you give it some thought don't you kind of think that he and his agent have a better feel for his job prospects than we do? And the prospects for next year of his current team? Maybe Minnesota is overpaying to get him to come on board.

Fleck is going to make "retire nicely for the rest of your life money" somewhere. In case anyone can't tell, I think that is a grade A crappy job right now.

Haven't seen a more blatant troll than blackhusker in quite some time. Even one of the mods has commented on his posting if I remember correctly...

21 million for six years? Good gawd, if true I understand we he would jump all over that, but I still think he's an idiot for doing so. Any kid who's good enough to be a difference maker and help you win in the B1G, is going to choose at least 6 schools over Minnesota, and that's just in the B1G conference alone.

Maybe I don't know as much as I think I do, but I have a hard time seeing how that's a good move from any standpoint other than just $$$. But I guess it's January, he's probably gotten the calls he was gonna get for this year.

Maybe as somebody said, WMU is due for a rebuild year or two and he felt like he needed to sell high. I just have a hard time seeing how you look at Minnesota in light of who else is there in your conference and say, "Yeah I can elevate that program and talk kids into coming up here and freezing their balls off for 5 years."

I think hearing 21 mil probably trumps a lot of factors. If he's a good coach he'll be fine, it's power 5, it's the same region, and all the big jobs are closed. He can wait around in purgatory or he can try his hand at a major conference. Minnesota doesn't have to be the destination but it's obviously a step up.

I think Fleck could have definitely held out for something better. But until someone waves $21 million at me and I see fit to turn it down, I'm not going to be too critical of him for taking the offer.

I agree .. lets tier the BIG coaching jobs

Tier 1 - Michigan, OSU, PSU
Tier 2 - Wisconsin, Nebraska, MSU??
Tier 3 - Iowa, I would put Minnesota here

better job than Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, NW, Rutgers, Maryland -- MSU was in this group or at least with Tier 3 until Dantanio got on a run

I don't think a MAC coach at this time is going to get a Tier 1 job - maybe tier 2 if the timing is exactly right

Minnesota is a middle of the pack power 5 school - if you are a good coach you will maintain this level -- ie 7-9 wins and regular bowl games - you will likely not get fired at Minnesota for quite some time with this level of success. In this respect you might be better off at Minnesota than at Nebraska at least as far as longevity is concerned. Consistent 8-9 win seasons at Nebraska will get you fired - probably not at Minnesota. If you are a great coach Minnesota will move up a tier and you now will have your name in the hat for some bigger time power 5 jobs. If you are a great, great coach you get Minnesota into the top 10 - if you do that once at MInnesota every big program comes calling and Minnesota ponies up big. If you do that at Nebraska you get a slap on the back and told to do it again and again.

He, by some reports, is getting paid close to what Riley is with much lower expectations.

It is yet to be seen if it is a bad move for Fleck, but you have to give Minnesota credit. It looks like a great move for them. I don't know the number, but they had a minimal buyout for Caleys, and went out and got a hot name, who is young and energetic and from all accounts isn't a egotistical doucher like a lot of coaches. A midwest guy who wanted to stay in the region who could create some excitement.
Pretty impressive from their side of the coin IMO.

Think about it...that money is all guaranteed so he is now set for life.

On top of that, what does he need to do at Minny to make another jump if he wants? Some "good" recruiting classes, 7-9 wins a year and mix in a big upset every other year...Boom...he has a new gig if he wants it.

He'll always be able to coach in the MAC again if he doesn't succeed at Minnesota. He may never get another $21 million offer.

For comparison purposes. Nick Saban left Toledo for Mich St. Mich St averaged roughly 6 wins a year under Saban, except for the last year when they won 9. It's just one example, so it doesn't prove anything other than it's an opportunity for him to build on.

Saban was also taking over a program that was on some sanctions. Playing NU in 95 and 96 was a cruel welcoming for Saban to big time cfb
