We've played roughly half the season so far, so given the belly-aching over all the players who should've been here but aren't now, I wanted to do some comparisons to see what we're missing:
Guards:
Buie - 21.6 mpg, 10.8 pts, 50% eFG, 27.9% ast rate, 17.1% TO rate, 1.8% steal rate
Spencer - 26.7 mpg, 10.6 pts, 46.9% eFG, 33.7% ast rate, 20.1% TO rate, 2.1% steal rate
Greer - 9.2 mpg, 1.3 pts, 30% eFG, 24.2% ast rate, 11.2% TO rate, 2.2% steal rate
Lathon - 26.3 mpg, 5.6 pts, 41.8% eFG, 20.6% ast rate, 23.9% TO rate, 2.5% steal rate
Buie and Spencer are outperforming Lathon in almost every stat, against a much more difficult schedule, in their first years playing college basketball. If Lathon didn't put himself in a position to lose his offer, does Buie come here?
Gaines - 26.5 mpg, 5.9 pts, 42.7% eFG, 45.8% FTrate, 3.6 rbd, 3.1% steal rate
Turner - 21.5 mpg, 4.3 pts, 35.5% eFG, 14.5% FTrate, 2.2 rbd, 1.3% steal rate
Ash - 17.2 mpg, 4.7 pts, 46.4% eFG, 39.3% FTrate, 2.9 rbd, 2.2% steal rate
Brown - 33.1 mpg, 10.5 pts, 49.6 eFG, 19.7% FTrate, 4.7 rbd, 1.7% steal rate
Gaines's poor numbers can be attributed to his injury and Turner will hopefully build on the IU game. Ash's numbers are roughly equivalent, except done against the #336th ranked schedule. Brown seems like he could've been useful as a shooting guard, but that's on Collins for why he couldn't get Brown to be a useful option. There's also no way Brown gets 33 mpg here this year.
Wings:
Kopp - 30.5 mpg, 12.6 pts, 53.5% eFG, 21.3% FTrate, 3.6 rbd, 0.5% blk rate, 0.8% steal rate
Falzon - 25.0 mpg, 7.4 pts, 50.6% eFG, 6.0% FTrate, 2.8 rbd, 2.0% blk rate, 1.4% steal rate
Kopp and Falzon play the same position, and Kopp is clearly better offensively, though Falzon is better defensively, with again the caveat that his stats are against the 5th-easiest schedule in the country. Unlikely Falzon would be getting 25 mpg here.
Nance - 29.2 mpg, 9.8 pts, 44.8% eFG, 6.4 rbd, 3.3% blk rate
Beran - 16.6 mpg, 4.4 pts, 49.0% eFG, 2.9 rbd, 2.5% blk rate
Ivanauskas - 29.4 mpg, 13.1 pts, 44.0% eFG, 7.8 rbd, 2.4% blk rate
Nance's disappointing numbers have been discussed ad nauseum lately, while Beran has shown some things the past few games. Ivanauskas' numbers aren't dramatically better while being the focal point of his team's offense against the #276th ranked schedule.
Centers:
Young - 27.4 mpg, 10.7 pts, 58.1% eFG, 68.5% FTrate, 7.1 rbd, 0.9% blk rate, 3.1 fouls/40
Jones - 8.3 mpg, 1.4 pts, 40.5% eFG, 19.1% FTrate, 1.4 rbd, 5.0% blk rate, 9.0 fouls/40
Benson - 24.4 mpg, 10.1 pts, 56.1% eFG, 37.4% FTrate, 5.3 rbd, 3.5% blk rate, 4.9 fouls/40
Young and Benson have equivalent stats despite Benson being a senior and Young being a freshman. Young gets to the line more often, rebounds more, and fouls less. Jones is raw but had a nice game against IU.
So out of the 6 players who've left or never made it here, only Brown in my opinion would be contributing at a level to this team better than the players we currently have. Given that, I'd much rather be in the situation this year, frustrating as it is, where we are throwing the young guys to the fire and letting them develop than playing a bunch of seniors who wouldn't appreciably make the team better than it currently is.
