Being someone who holds the Chicago Sun-Times prep sports coverage in fairly high regard, I thought it would be interesting to some of you guys as to the current status of the most recent S-T prep football Chicago area Player of the Year.
2016 (fall of 2016) — Jake Marwede was the tight end for Loyola's state-championship team in November of 2016 and he is now on the Duke roster. He redshirted (sat out) the 2017 season. Last year, as a redshirt freshman, he was a backup tight end and was felled midway through the season by the dreaded ACL injury. He obviously missed spring practice in the spring of 2019, and now as a redshirt sophomore, he is not listed on the two-deep depth chart for the Blue Devils' season opener against 'Bama.
2017 (fall of 2017) — As a quarterback, Samson Evans led Prairie Ridge to the 2017 state title and was truly amazing as a clutch-play performer. He's a scholarship player at Iowa, but was not recruited to play QB, likely because of his size (6-0, 210). He redshirted (sat out) the 2018 season, so he is now a redshirt freshman with the Hawkeyes. Alas, as of now, he's not listed on the team's depth chart at running back, which is his current listed position. He wears No. 22, and that is the number also worn by the team's punter, which means Evans won't be on the field covering punts.
2018 (fall of 2018) — Quarterback Payton Thorne is a scholarship freshman at Michigan State, but it appears he is headed for a redshirt (sitting out) season. The Spartans list a redshirt senior, a redshirt sophomore and a redshirt freshman as the three quarterbacks on the depth chart for this weekend's season opener against Tulsa.

Samson was no doubt an electric high school player but I always wondered how he would fit in a large program like Iowa. Would rather have him at my alma mater ISU where I think he’d be contributing now.

You are of the belief Evans was not recruited to play QB at Iowa due to his height? Ok!

On a side note, if he gets on the field for Iowa someday it’s because they convert him to defense....Likely Strong safety or add some size and play OLB.

He wasn’t recruited as a QB. His passing ability was average at best. He was being looked at more of a receiver.

I was making the smart *** point that he was not recruited as a QB because he was a triple option QB not due to height as implied in the initial post. As I stated above in my edit, if he ever sees the field at Iowa it will be on defense.
