Playing Clemson in Pinstripe Bowl

Surprised, I thought they would setup the rivalry game vs Pitt.

Iowa St to turn down bowl invite and pay 500K fine to Big12

I'm guessing this decision by ISU is because their coaching staff is in disarray until next year and would seem to suggest that a lot of their players have opted out of the bowl and hitting the portal.

Story I read was players met with admin and said they didn't want to play and admin agreed, so they bailed. Big 12 said they have to fine them because they have obligations to fill bowl slots, now 5 - 7 teams will come into play and they said Florida st. may get called

K-State also fined 500k
I'm really hopeful this ends the bowl nonsense

Sounds about right.... if all, or the majority, of their players are opting out (i.e., "don't want to play".... a polite way of saying "aren't going to play" and there is no way ISU can make them play) then it is likely that a lot of ISU players with remaining eligibility are hitting the portal.

So Terry Smith is coaching the tea in the Pinstripe Bowl. Are all the current PSU coaches contractually obligated to also coach?

Why do you hate college football so much?
He’s usually wrong, but he’s not on this topic. The bowls need to end. Just let the teams continue to practice and don’t have a game. Look how many teams aren’t going to have players or coaches for this bowl season. I read that Notre Dame is skipping their bowl. It’s out of hand.

If you don't want to watch them, don't. There are plenty of people that do. That's why they're still going on. What benefit does not having them provide?

I love college football--I can't wait to watch 11 playoff games
Bowl games aren't real games--they're just a reward--if the kids don't want a reward then it's pointless

The benefit is K-State and Iowa State aren't fined 500k for not wanting to play a scrimmage.

Apparently the players don’t want to play in them, so that trumps the few people who want to watch them. Not having them makes 6-6 coaches have to step up their game instead of winning the Toilet Bowl and getting a Gatorade bath afterwards, making them feel like they’re doing a good job.

Bowl games are the life of college football.

Terry Smith is PSYCHED. Great matchup.

Terry Smith is ready to lead Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl: 'This group is hungry and we’re ready for this opportunity'

https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-stat...s-hungry-and-were-ready-for-this-opportunity/

Dabo Sweeney is also PSYCHED!!!

“We are super excited to accept our invitation to the Pinstripe Bowl to be able to play in historic Yankee Stadium, to have Christmas in New York and to play a historic opponent like Penn State. “I’ve been to a lot of bowls in my life as a player and coach at Alabama and as a coach at Clemson. But this is the first time in my life that I’ve had the opportunity to play in a bowl in New York City.

“I’m really excited about heading to the Big Apple. We have a lot of Clemson alumni in the area that will be pumped to see the Tigers. For our football team, it’s a great opportunity to have a great finish. Obviously we had a tough start. But we have the opportunity to win five in a row and take great momentum into the new year. We can add to our FBS record by winning a postseason game for the 15th straight year. And, reach eight wins for the 15th year in a row.

What are they going to say?
"This is stupid but if we don't go the Big Ten (ACC) will fine about 1M dollars and take away bowl revenue so we have no choice but to go"

And Dabo is excited for exactly the reason I posted…he wants to win this game and act like he did a great job this year. The bowl games are the last chance for coaches to salvage a bad season.

They ceased to be relevant since the playoffs. As I recall the schools are charged for tickets whether they can sell them or not.

Just open up a 15 day practice session for all schools not it the playoffs. Any players wanting to opt out can.

This explanation has never made sense to me. Before the playoffs there were dozens of bowl games that had no bearing on the national championship. But everyone played in them and tried to win them. We're dealing with a different type of player these days. A worse one.

Yeah, how dare they not want to play in a game that doesn't mean anything
The playoff exposed the sham that was bowl games

Back when bowls really mattered, only two teams had a shot at the NC. Now with a 12 team playoff teams have more of a shot to get in. So if they expanded the playoffs to 64 teams, you’d still want the teams left out to play in bowl games? Since the top players don’t value them enough to play in them, it’s time to shut them down.

Dinosaur. Needs to be put down or allowed to evolve into something else. These conferences again screwing things up; fines if the team doesn’t want another run at getting CTE for our entertainment? Joke.

I think the point is that with the CFP format, bowl games on the outside are basically irrelevant.

The trend is for more and more schools to turn down invites if the bowl game is not part of the CFP.

There should definitely be fewer bowls so there is less issue with filling (and so they would be more of a reward) but they are in general a good thing for college football and should stick around.

Why are they a good thing? In every other sport, if you don’t make the playoffs, your season is over. Why does college football have to be different?

I don't see why people have a problem with the bowls. If you don't like them, don't watch, then it's like they never happened for you. I enjoy watching some of them and I have always enjoyed the bowl games that I have attended. I am excited to see Penn State play one more time this year and if I wasn't going to be in Punta Cana on the 27th I would probably go to the game.

If everyone had this approach there wouldn't be an argument but when people start criticizing players for opting out or state these game have true meaning that's when there's a problem.
As much as I think they're a waste I wouldn't have an issue if instead of worrying about beating Clemson or if Kaytron will play if we were excited to see some of the young guys get reps. If Kaytron wants to play good for him but he shouldn't be expected to.

I would be willing to bet that most of the college football players do want the "reward" of a bowl game.
We know of about a dozen teams that turned down a bowl game because they can't be fined and 2 that turned it down despite the fine. No one wants to go to Birmingham apparently.

I usually try to make the bowl game no matter where it is as an excuse for a mini vacation in a warm climate.

I guess this year it's an excuse to take a train to NYC for a few days and take in a Broadway show, go skating at Rockefeller, etc.

Well, there will be more than a dozen teams playing in bowls, so those kids want to go. I bet that a large majority of the teams who aren't bowl eligible would love the opportunity to play in a bowl, too.
