Well, there will be more than a dozen teams playing in bowls, so those kids want to go. I bet that a large majority of the teams who aren't bowl eligible would love the opportunity to play in a bowl, too.
They don't have a choice...they were told they're going because the programs can't decline without a large fine unless they won 5 or less games.
Literally countless 5-7 teams have turned down bowls including Temple Rutgers Auburn and FSU
Why do you believe the kids care about bowl games? See opt outs

I think this is a great opportunity some of our younger guys to get some game reps if the NFL bound players opt out. I am really looking forward to seeing some of the young RBs. They looked promising in limited time. Same with the WRs. Give me some Howard and Denmark. OL with Cousins, Birchmeier, and Williams? Yes, please. Would I like to win? Sure. But I think this is a great chance for some to establish themselves for next season and I’m sure Campbell and staff will be watching closely.

I don't see why people have a problem with the bowls. If you don't like them, don't watch, then it's like they never happened for you. I enjoy watching some of them and I have always enjoyed the bowl games that I have attended. I am excited to see Penn State play one more time this year and if I wasn't going to be in Punta Cana on the 27th I would probably go to the game.
But will it really be Penn State you’re watching? It will be a shell of the team and many of the guys playing will be leaving via the portal and won’t be on the team next year.

Yeah...just replace it with a G5 playoff...everyone should be happy(ish)
I would be intrigued by a G5 playoff. I have no winning argument against your feelings towards bowl games. Yet, I'll watch them. I'll even look forward to several. I know kids opt out. I know it is an injury risk. I know in some cases, it's a JV game. I know all of that and have no logical argument against it. I am a dinosaur and always loved bowl season.

And this I respect--bowl season used to be my favorite time of year--it's cold outside and I have football on basically every day. That has changed a bit but I'll still throw it on as background noise. I just don't care about who wins any more. I do care about the outcome of the 11 playoff games though.

Are you going to watch the Pinstripe Bowl?
The only other thing to really watch at that time is Dallas-Washington so I'm sure a lot of people will watch
Most just won't care about the outcome--do you get the difference?
Remember, you said winning the bowl game was more important than the coaching hire...

Will be interesting to see Allen and Knowles going head-to-head on D. Allen wasn't great last year, but he did a decent job replacing Diaz. I think PSU might have won a few more games this season if he had stayed.

You allege that you're a Penn State fan. Are you telling me you care more about the outcome of Alabama vs. Oklahoma than you do Penn State vs.Clemson?

I’m sure I will….just don’t know who I will be watching….it will be a team in Penn State uniforms but not sure the players will be Penn State guys next year. And we’ll likely get crushed, so not sure that will be much fun.

100%--one game matters--the other doesn't
The outcome of the bowl game is meaningless
Pretending otherwise doesn't make you a better fan--it just makes you one that isn't knowledgeable.

Oh, so you are just a fair weather fan. You root for the team if they're winning. You'll jump on the bandwagon if they're doing well. Gotcha.
It's a bowl game....it doesn't matter.
There's no bandwagon...just like I didn't complain when we lost to Ole Miss. I simply comprehend the game doesn't matter. I discussed every single game this year and every year.

What part of bowls are meaningless are you struggling with? Again, you claimed this bowl game was more important than the coaching hire.

Also, you all claim to be Penn State fans but I'm one of the few that actually follow all sports. Even awful sports like wrestling...the sport where we have many bandwagon fans because we win.

Again it's a bowl game...one we'd have turned down if it wouldn't cost us millions

That doesn't bother me at all. They will be wearing the Blue and White and I will be cheering for them.

There’s a difference between watching a game and caring about the outcome of a game. I’m quite sure almost all the posters on here will watch the playoff games (as I will), but most won’t give a rip who wins. Most fans only get fully vested in games their team is playing in (bowl game or not).

I will be cheering for them too, but they’re not really representative of the team….especially after they get beat by 30.

You think they will get beat by 30 by that juggernaut Clemson team?
We almost got beat by Rutgers with no one opting out…how do you think our second and third team will do against Clemson? It’s going to be ugly.

He’s usually wrong, but he’s not on this topic. The bowls need to end. Just let the teams continue to practice and don’t have a game. Look how many teams aren’t going to have players or coaches for this bowl season. I read that Notre Dame is skipping their bowl. It’s out of hand.
Notre Dump is skipping because they are pouting like the bratty children that is the University of Notre Dump.

This doesn't make sense
The playoff matters--like it did last year when we were involved in it. And I watched all 11 games--like I will this year. Because as an actual fan of college football (not someone that likes Penn State and hates college football) those games matter. Just like people watch the Super Bowl.
Fans of sport--and athletes--care about winning when it matters.

I care about winning all games. As do most normal people.

But you didn't answer the question. What do you get out of winning a national championship? Pride? Happiness?

Again, it's a scrimmage
I don't get anything out of it--it's about the relevance in the grand scheme of things
You're comparison is like saying Pre-season games in the NFL have the same meaning as winning a SB
They don't.
See the tv ratings for the playoff games and the bowl games

If Penn State makes the playoff and wins the national championship, I'd be happy. I would get joy out of it. If Penn State wins the Pinstripe Bowl, I'd be happy. I'd get joy out of it. I get no joy out of winning a meaningless game--if you do that's great for you. I accept the game for what it is

If you just want to watch it because you enjoy it that's great but not everyone needs to do the same and you can't bash players that opt out.

Yes, I will bash players that quit on the team. It wasn't long ago where it was unheard of to sit out a game, no matter how meaningless you might think it is. It's called quitting.

They didn't quit--their obligation is over which is why they're allowed to opt out
You're stuck in the past and holding them to standards of the past
There's no quitting--it's why they're even allowed on the sidelines.
Your attitude about it is why bowls need to end--because of irrational fans attacking them

If their obligation is over, then I guess it's okay to sit out the playoff games?

And calling it an "obligation" is hilarious. Again, I remember when college football players enjoyed playing in college football games. Kirk and Desmond talked about that a couple years ago saying that kids today just don't love the game the way they used to. And they got crucified for it. They were absolutely right.

They wouldn't be playing if they didn't love the game (that comment is spoken like someone who has never played sports at a high level and doesn't comprehend the commitment) but now 95% of people comprehend what the bowls are. CMC showed everyone the light
