Playing Time

I thought the playing time was way off tonight based on who was playing well.

Bolden has been playing great defense especially on the pick and roll and has been playing well in the paint. I thought he should have been in a lot more.

Giles looked better than he's looked all season and had a great first half.

I think Tatum plays much better on both ends as a 3 instead of a 4.

Grayson was really bad all night on both ends. He and Kennard on the floor at the same time don't score enough to offset how terrible we are defensively.

Amile hasn't been great since coming back from the injury.

I thought our best lineup tonight would have been Jackson, Kennard, Tatum, Giles, Bolden.

Minutes is something we can quibble about every game. For about 32 minutes of this game Duke was in control, relatively speaking. When it came time to put State away we couldn't do it.

Tatum made his share of mistakes for sure, so did a ton of guys and so did some of the coaching decisions. Tatum was 7-14 from the field and grabbed 9 boards, had 3 dimes. That's with missing three or four layups. We remember the layups and the turnover at the end bc it's convenient and we need a scapegoat. Again, not excusing him but his miscues didn't cost us the game, they just were one of many miscues that we had that added to it. Grayson shot terrible. Can't even sugarcoat it. Luke despite having 20 gave up a number of looks. Our rotation on defense was sporadic at best. We had some really moronic and untimely turnovers at the end of the first half and when we were up late in the second. Frank probably should have been checked in before Luke fouled out. We were pitiful from the line, and that includes Luke unexpectedly missing the front end of a 1&1. We failed to get stop after stop when we needed it most and give credit to DSJ, he was sensational. But this one is on the collective whole and that is the moral of the story. So continue bashing one kid this game and one kid the next game but much like Matt wasn't the reason we lost a game in Tallahassee, Jayson isn't the reason we lost it here. We just aren't a good team and perhaps we won't be. I hope that we can become one and take advantage of the tremendous talent we have but thus far, we haven't.

I was definitely not blaming Tatum. I had him in my preferred lineup at the end. I think one of the things with the amount of talent we have is getting the players on the court who are playing well that night. Last night, Matt, Grayson, and Amile all struggled most of the game. Bolden and Giles played very well and IMO should have been on the floor at the end.

In the last two games, with Bolden at the 5 and another big at the 4 moving Tatum out to the wing, our defense has been really good. When we bring in Luke and Grayson together and move Tatum down to the 4, our defense stinks and we don't make up for it on the offensive end.
