As of right now, its Lee and then POB. Lots of football before next fall though.
I'm not sure what the ideal outcome would be. On one hand, you might want Lee to be the clear-cut starter for two years. Then POB takes over as a RS junior in 2019. Maybe you want POB to win the job as a RS Frosh with Lee being a quality, veteran back-up.
Sounds like Gebbia red-shirts next year, which would put him a year behind POB. I'm not sure which of those guys projects as the better option when they both have been around a few years.
Of course, it's imperative that NU signs a quality QB in every class so we're not faced with walk-ons as part of the equation.

We have had a walk on QB in our top 3 QB over the past 3 or 4 years is because Pelini and Beck failed at getting a quilty QB like Burrow who ended up at tOSU.
Burrow certainly would have been a welcome addition to the roster. Thanks Bo and Beck.
Lee starts followed by POB---issue will be #3, I know that sounds funny but look at this year, (yesterday) no real option.
Knowing Lee had to sit out because of transferring a couple of posters informed us if he was eligible he would have beaten TA out for QB this year.
Hey, they had much bigger fish to fry, I think Dillman was his name? Big time talent from Sweden that was playing on JV because his school transfer wasn't ever approved? Is that right? Makes sense why they wouldn't consider Burrow.
While I too am miffed that they wiffed on Burrow, or more accurately completely blew him off, to be fair Dillman started the process as a high 4* out in Cali but he had that major injury (achilles if I remember), the transfer fiasco, etc, and they remained lazy and stayed with him while his stock plummeted. Old staff kept getting themselves stuck with a lot of "damaged goods" QBs---Stanton coming off his sr year ACL, Darlington with the concussions and Dillman. While I am sure they are good young men, you have to look after your program.
This staff wasn't starting anyone over Armstrong for the season. Tommy would've divided this team quicker and worse than Pelini and Kaczenski did in 2015.
Hopefully that is true.
I just want a couple QBs that can pass accurately all over the field and be able to go through his progressions instead of deciding where to throw it before the ball is snapped.
Is that too much to ask?
I've seen some college teams that even have a QB that can call audibles at the LOS and get into a better play if needed.
Did he graduate last academic year? That's the only way he could transfer, or go to a lower level, since he already used a redshirt.
If he did, you then run the risk of losing other members of the senior class. Tommy's "boys".
Next year might be a situation like this year where the #3 QB is actually redshirting (Gebbia). Darlington would probably be the emergency QB, assuming he sticks around.

Reports are he is a great leader, makes all the throws in practice and some have said he may be a 1 and done NFL type. Fwiw
7 years (2010-2016), since Martinez didn't finish his Sr. year before TA took over. I guess you could say they had a safety net in 2013 when TA was a RS Frosh back-up to TM.
I think people are overrating Tommy's popularity with the team. They didn't even vote him as a captain.

He's the leader of the senior class. They don't represent the team which is why he didn't get the votes for captain.

Hope that is true, but it won't be the first time we've heard about a "Scout Team Hero" whose finest moments were just that - on the scout team.
Lee was a 2 star recruit when he signed with Tulane. His numbers in two years there were nothing special - worse than those of Tommy Armstrong. None of that screams "difference maker". Hopefully he's more Zach Taylor than Sam Keller.
Don't be so pessimistic. He could easily be the next Sam Keller, who was going to make all the throws that Zac Taylor couldn't!
At the same time, this offense will be hard to defend if the QB can make the throws expected of him.
It goes both ways... yes it would be great if he could run, but being able to complete passes will instantly make this offense better.
Lets see. Who ever heard of Big Ben before he QBed the Steelers? Who ever heard of Tom Brady before he QBed the Patriots? How many stars did they have? The game changes DRAMATICALLY when you move up the ladder. How many 4 star guys have done absolutely nothing at NU? Zac Taylor a lowly ranked guy out of high school and Joe Ganz a lowly ranked guy out of high school turned out to be Bill Callahan's best QB recruits. We also heard about TM first when he kept torching our D as a scout team QB. Just because they are a scout team hero doesn't mean they won't be good. We'll find out in less than a year.
I understand that it's common wisdom that Lee will start, but a quick look at his stats, he passed for 180 yards per game just over 50% and had 9 TDs. Granted it was at Tulane and he was a sophomore but let's not expect an NFL caliber QB. He was a 3 star recruit and I think primarily brought in as insurance if POB isn't ready as a redshirt freshman.
I hope for the best for Lee but I'm not banking on a miracle leap in talent with a year of sitting out.

Well, I had definitely heard of Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady before they joined the Steelers and Patriots, respectively. I don't know much about their high school years nor their recruitment. I would love it if Tanner Lee's career emulated theirs.
