Trouble with Texas is that it's the form with the least possible outcomes given only two unknown cards and five common. Net, it favors pros statistical analysis skills over other forms that have no common cards & thus more possible outcomes. Additionally, nine players means you sit out 75% of hands. Give me 5-6 handed draw or stud sitting around in the basement drinking beer.

I play several times a year with 5 guys from work. Dealer’s choice. Quarter ante, nickel minimum bet, quarter max, three raise max. We each start with $50, and if you go broke your night is over. Typical poker night goes from 6pm until at least midnight.

I personally like Texas Holdem over draw games because it eliminates quite a bit of luck and you can actually be better at it than someone else. A game like five card draw is just much more controlled by luck. Almost like playing showdown poker at a Catholic picnic. Some people prefer that, I just don't.

With those low bets, it will take awhile. We generally play nl texas hold'em tournaments with at 50 or 100 buy in, or we play nl texas hold'em cash games with 1/2 blinds where everyone buys in for a max of 200, but you can always reload once your out. The good thing about the tournament is you know you will lose no more than your buy in, but depending on the number of players can win 5-7 times what you bought in for.

We play at one of my stores every other week. It’s a pretty regular group of players consisting of a few of my employees and friends/customers. Started it a few years ago thinking it wouldn’t last but we all love it. We play $50 buy in tourney with unlimited rebuys until 8pm (start at 5:30). Just a few months ago we also started an additional game once a month with just the $50 buy in with no re buys. The guys seem to like that as well. We tried to play cash games a few times but those seem to get out of hand kinda quickly money wise. It is after all people who work and buy from me don’t wanna ever have hard feelings.

Agree about TX eliminating luck. Exactly why casual players like me are turned off by it- plus the high percent of the time you're sitting around. The more luck the better.

The low bets and $50 lose-it-you’re-out rule was instituted by me when the game originated some 30+ years ago.

I had some really bad experiences at poker nights when I was in the USAF. Back then we played with no limits. Guys would get drunk and lose a paycheck, and have to explain that to their wives or GFs. And several times there were hurt feelings where guys felt they were taken advantage of. The lower stakes keeps it friendly and fun. $50 is a fairly cheap/fun night out with the boys. And we’ve all outgrown the getting too drunk phase, so that helps too.

Several of us quickly grew tired of in between, and it’s now generally frowned upon.

We try to stick to variations of 5 card draw and 7 card stud.

If you are playing online, can’t you run a side program/calculator that would tell you the most optimal move to make each time?

My personal favorite game, and one I deal most often, is called The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Dealt and played as 7 card stud.

Start the deal exactly like stud, each player gets 2 down 1 up. After the last up card, dealer places the next three cards, face down, just above their up card. Those three cards will be markers only, not community cards. First round of bets.

Deal everyone a second up card, then turn over the left marker card which is “the good”. This card is now wild for anyone possessing it. Second round of bets.

Deal everyone a third up card, then turn the middle marker card which is “the bad”. Anyone possessing this card must discard it. Third round of bets.

Deal everyone the last up card, then turn the right marker card which is “the ugly”. Anyone possessing this card must fold. Another round of bets.

Deal everyone final down card. All markers still apply, so if you get “the ugly” on your last card you are out. Last round of bets, then the reveal.

Good for lots of laughs, and great for those that get dealt “the ugly” to practice stringing cuss words together.

I used to play a lot and my favorite game was Omaha a variation of Texas hold'em where you get 4 cards in your hand 5 common cards in the middle but the trick is you have to play exactly 2 in your hand and exactly 3 on the board.

Have played it high low as well but that is a really tough thinking man's game. As an aside, thought I was pretty good until I went to Belterra and sat down at an Omaha game and several regulars just cleaned me out in about an hour. Learned my lesson to stay away from the sharp players at the casinos the hard way.

Been playing Poker all my life. I have played everything from penny ante up to a 10 thousand dollar buy in. Played in numerous WSOP and a couple WPT events. Mostly now just play 2-5 cash games at the casino

Play Hold'em about half a dozen times a year, 7-8 players. $50/game. Deal twice around, then raise blinds. Goes quick at end, which usually results in splitting pot and beginning another game.

I think Omaha & HL are less predictable than TX, so prefer. Not that I've played either much.

Anybody make up their own game for cash games? Here's mine.

Blackjack poker. It's 5 card draw progressive. To win the pot you not only have to have the best hand but it also has to be a blackjack hand between 25 and 35. 2 aces are great in this game because you can't be under 25 or over 35 with any 5 cards.

It's like the guy in the post below me saying they play jack or better, trips to win. If nobody can open you redeal and reante. If nobody gets trips to win, those that stayed in redeal and reante until someone wins.
In my game there is guts to open but to win the pot, your hand has to be a blackjack value between 25 and 35. It's messed up because 4 kings wouldn't win you the pot unless you bluff everyone out. You would have 40 before your 5th card. You would just create a redeal with that hand.
