Farmers have been making money for a long time now because of subsidies. I have known many who work at Ft. Sill that have farms and have said that they get money from the government when they don't turn a profit. They can do this for about 4 years and then must show a profit in the 5th year and then the process continues on for another 4 years. Wash, rinse, and repeat. I overheard one talking to another one the other day explaining to him how to do it.

Going to the ASCS (USDA) office is very similar to going to the welfare office. Everyone is there to "sign up". Also, like welfare, knowing how to game the system depends upon how much money one gets.

Everyone has to sign up their "base" and get a farm number, but almost all of them get some sort of subsidy. The government used to pay my dad a healthy sum to not grow corn. So, he got money for not doing what he wasn't going to do anyway. I know many who get big subsidies for a subpar crop who then turn around and collect insurance on top of that. Other get large sums to build barns or add to them, fence fields that are already fenced, diesel fuel, land conservation is a big one, and the latest is ECAP.
