If one were to look at the current political system logically and objectively, they might see a pattern of politicians running for office to try to avoid or control investigations and jail time. Lyndon Johnson said it well-

The power that the accusation of being a “racist” has on weak minds is tremendous.

It explains an incredible number of the failings we have had in our culture in the last 40 years.

Yes but there is more too. If im labeled a racist as an attack mechanism, i lose my entire career. A few years ago, that happens just on the accusation. Nowadays at least you get some semblance of a chance to defend yourself, but usually for naught.

For far too long that de facto designation is a way to hold people in line via economic threats.
