If you're young and ambitious and looking for "chance for advancement" you leave. Harlan, Harlan Co., and large swathes of our country are dying. Meanwhile all that wealth keeps concentrating at the top. Three men have more wealth than the entire bottom half of the country. 165 million people. And the top 1% has more than 90% of us. Almost everyone. That includes most of you who consider yourselves 'middle class'. We aren't in decline because of immigrants.

That was part of my point and the reason I used that particular turn of phrase. Even a dumb rich person gets that money guaranteed for doing nothing. A smart one uses it to make even more. And more. And more. Opportunities the rest of us don't have. All just for being rich. Many of them born that way.
It's the reason millions of America seniors aren't in poverty. Yes, you could theoretically make more on your own. But most wouldn't in actual practice. And the few that would've used it responsibly and actually saved for retirement with smart investments that paid off are already doing so, so it's a moot point.
