Pont-ificating about Indiana

It’s refreshing to see Indiana and Cincinnati in the top 10 in college football national rankings along with the usual suspects of Alabama, et al.

For Indiana it’s the most amazing season since Coach Johnny Pont came to Bloomington from Miami of Ohio in Oxford after a few seasons with Yale to go from a 1-8-1 season that gave him a 3-16-1 record at the helm of the Hoosiers to win 9 games in 1967 – 8 of team by 5 or fewer points! Talk about coming through under pressure and in the clutch!

Sort of reminds me of Iowa State’s resurrection in the Big 12 this season.

As a fellow Monongah High graduate I am proud of the job Nick Saban has done at Alabama, but it’s good to see fresh blood from time to time. Those who knew Saban at Monongah High still call him Brother, the nickname his sister gave him after he was born.

And, oh brother, what a career he has had! Brother and Bear Bryant are going to have a fantastic conservation some day in Heaven. Even St. Peter will pause with his Golden Gate duties to listen in.

Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on the wall when it happens?

Teams like Indiana, Northwestern, and even WVU are proof of what a good coach can do with lesser talent. These teams don't rake in groves of 4 & 5 star talent, but with a good coach, you can win with lesser talent with coaching them up, out scheming the more talented squads, and having them prepared to play. We have top ranked recruiting classes at Michigan, but fail to utilize that talent.

Tom Allen isn't a good coach; he's a great coach. You can tell that his players would run through a wall for him, and he's done a great job of recruiting in Florida, especially Tampa, where he has a lot of contacts.

He also has a damn good coaching staff. I think he's from Indiana, so he may stick around and have them very competitive every year.

Kevin Wilson had talent there

I actually wondered what was going on because I thought Ramsey was a winner

He was because he changed Northwestern. But Pennix was good enough to push Ramsey out for

Indiana is bringing in decent QBs. Tom Allen couldn't have done what he has without Wilson. He made them competitive

End of the day they are basketball 365 days of the year

247 and Rivals doesn't determine talent

The player does.

Players going into college are ranked but that didn't win games
What does is where the players are at coming out of HS

Iowa State ..
Brocky Purdy
Composite on 247 had him the 36th ranked Pro style QB
Breece Hall
22nd rated RB
Charlie Kolar
57th rated TE

It is crazy to think that these rankings are absolute
They are flawed and don't mean anything

What does is the rankings when these players leave College

You really think Hall is still the 22nd best RB
He wasn't even a Top 300 player

Definitely is now. Top 50 player in that class

Is Michigan becoming the Texas of the Big 10? One failed coach after another beginning with Rod Fraud.

Yes, the soft culture of Austin, TX & Ann Arbor, MI are very similar. I would rather have Rod than Harbaugh, at least he would cry during post game press conferences.

Hope you rehire RichFraud after Hairball leaves. I loved seeing shrimps at the skill positions, and converted receivers masquerading as defensive backs. The game passed RR by many years ago.

They just need a normal football coach. Not somebody that runs a shell game, not somebody that clapped like a cheerleader on the sidelines, and certainly not somebody that's a weirdo. One would think they could simply hire somebody that runs a normal football program. With the talent they can recruit, a normal coach could get to 9 wins a season, and possibly compete for a divisional championship on a regular basis. I think they've done it once since Carr retired, and that was the OT game against Ohio State where we got robbed.

The best part of the one game since Urban Meyer was hired that Michigan actually had a chance to win was your stalking of the official with whom I played football in high school. That was classic. Some Ohio State fans actually want Michigan to be good to add to the strength of the rivalry and conference, but not me. I remember the 1990s, and the traitors from Ohio who helped Michigan be good back then, and hope that Michigan goes 0-12 every season. And, I know that you feel the same way about Ohio State, and that's the way it should be.

Nobody that has an IQ more than a doorknob thinks those findings are absolute. They do give ve you a good idea of overall quality of the schools recruiting class. There will be 5* busts and 3* surprises.

Finished product does.

Dan Mullen when he was at Miss State and what Gary Patterson has done at TCU disagrees.

The one program that ***** on that is Utah.
I don't know their recruiting classes during this time. Most likely all out of the Top 25
They had 12 NFL draft picks the last two NFL drafts
Including 7 last year.
Even further back. 21 draft picks in 4 years

There is only one way to judge recruiting.
Finished product

NFL draft picks
Game starts
# of players who produced

There are exceptions to that rule. These are usually programs who recruit in talent rich states and evaluate well.

Too many players for any of these sites to conduct full evaluation
Plus we are talking about 16-18 year olds and not understanding where they are mentally.
Some players do much better when you tell them they are 3 stars
While some do not when you tell them they are 5 stars.
Work ethic when they step on campus.
