I was thinking that Pope had an all star coaching staff, but was I wrong! These guys can’t recruit, develop, or coach.

My first clue should have been that he hired Mark Fox, who couldn’t even hack it at Georgia who cares nothing about basketball.

Little did we realize for all this talk about “understanding the assignment,” he basically just gave his buddies big, fat pay raises. I had a sneaking suspicion something was wrong when he turned down Orlando Antigua who wanted to return under Pope. Imagine having one of the best recruiters in the game practically begging to join you staff but decide that Mark f*cking Fox is who you really want.

Man you can find 100 different things to complain about right now but cleaning Cal’s boys out shouldn’t be held against him.

We’re talking about coaches, not generals of an army… It’s overly paranoid crap to think Antigua would somehow sabotage the team.
Apparently you’re wrong because Pope didn’t hire him regardless his abilities huh? I’ll trust Pope
more than I do an internet warrior.

Two adages apply here.

1) you are who you surround yourself with.
2) C- leaders hire C- leaders

Mark Fox (things went well for him as Georgia coach)….

Jason Hart (the last time the Syracuse Orange were relevant were the Pearl Washington days)…….

In either instance, it doesn’t bode well for Mark Pope.

As bad as recruiting has been, I’d trust the drunken old man on the street corner flashing passersby's to find a better coaching staff than Pope can. Gillispie managed to recruit better, at least.

I was in Nashville & saw that debacle first hand and can say the assistants sit there like our former coaches assistants. You can color me not impressed and definitely not in how recruiting or lack there has been.

Coaches have to be able to adapt to their team, he may want to shoot 30 threes a game but that definitely is not this teams strong suit so adapt the offense to what they’re good at. We don’t or haven’t to this point so maybe on staff the 6-7 figure guys can maybe see that in the film room and run some actual screens for guys away from the ball to free up driving lanes.

He recruited so well that Cal rescinded the offers to almost all of his commitments. Did you forget Zollo, Villarino sp?,Euton, Avery, etc. ?

He also pulled in Patrick Patterson, Darius Miller, Deandre Liggins, Jorts. Guys who palyed key parts in our 2010, 2011, and 2012 seasons. Not including Daniel Orton who was a 5 star.

Immediately off the top of my head Carmello Anthony was 20 years younger than Washington. 5 final 4's, 2 runner-ups, and a title since the day's of Pearl Washington.
That is true. Are you advocating for Hart and defending this UK staff? As season ticket holder at Syracuse for many years, Boeheim and his staff were massive underachievers based on talent alone (one could argue like Cal at UK) and ran a questionable program. But hey, his assistant Bernie Fine was top notch and his wife sure did love and support the SU players. He did produce Pitino which worked out for us.

I was simply pointing out how ridiculously inaccurate that claim was.

Fair enough, each entitled to own opinion. My view, Boeheim was at Syracuse for 45+ years and resulted in one national title. I like to think at UK we hold ourselves to a higher standard including who we surround our basketball program with, including assistants. But hey, Jim B is a great guy, funny, nice, intelligent and didn't ruffle feathers with his players. He isn’t the greatest driver however.

Mikhail McLean is so irrelevant that I forget he's on the staff half the time. Evidently, he was the one who did a lot of the communicating with families about NIL during last year's portal cycles. Someone had reported on here that he was going after Ian Jackson. A lot of good that one did us.

Fuegar is our John Welch, but the issue is that Fox gives us next to nothing, Hart has been massively underachieving as a lead recruiter, Brooks III was never an elite recruiter, and McLean is forgettable.

For being a Kentucky staff, there are zero killers on this staff. Reminds me of the midpoint of Tubby's time here, when his assistants were all basically the same guy and none of them were killers.

Pope hired his friends, not coworkers who are expected to produce results.
