Kentucky has always had "microwave" fans with zero patience and relatively little understanding of coaching. They want to win now "because Kentucky" and they think that's how it works. Nothing has changed.
When he got here Cal hit the ground running, was already at an upper tier basketball school (which he helped put there), cornered the "1 semester and done," and had great players here already. If he could coach worth 2 @#$%* he would've had at LEAST 3 MORE TITLES.
Pope walked into an abandoned house and built better than expected on a very short time frame. I said then it would be a bad thing that he took last year's team as far as he did. Kentucky fans couldn't and can't understand why. So they'll dig the hole deeper by making his job a "hot seat" job and players will be reluctant to commit to a coach that might not be retained. (Pitino didn't worry about winning immediately, which is the right way to build. Then again, he had no heart for Kentucky when he arrived like Pope does. If Pope had built a "fighting scrapping Wildcats" team and not gotten the wins, he'd have more latitude outside the LOD/Negs who are never happy. It is what is now, though.)
UK fans are their own worst enemas.
He's got SOLID core of talent that, if the fans dont run them off, he could really build on for next season. I don't know if he can recruit well enough to produce titles in this environment. Cal couldn't, and that's saying something, but I still think Pope, with 2 real STARS at key positions can win more than Cal can with 4. Period.
We won't know if he can get them on campus and keep them healthy until he does or doesn't. He's had 1 recruiting class. Those players are contributing and developing. Unless the team just quits, I think we will the coach and UK will be a lot better next season.
My biggest cringe about things so far is his psychological approach. He's taking so long and so much time trying to figure out each player that he's missing the basics that this (like most sport) is a BATTLE and whoever is man enough to win it, takes it.
I think being soft makes soft. Demanding and demonstrating toughness and fire/heart (both physical and mental) at all times builds toughness and earns respect. Jmo though
You can't worry what UK fans think (truthfully they mostly just FEEL because they love Kentucky). You just have to keep working
