Have been thinking to myself what if this current staff coached that Wisconsin game.
We would have won by 15 I believe. The defense on that team was special and he would have played Booker, Ulis, and the Harrison’s together if he had to for shooting with KAT shooting 3’s. Maybe Ulis, Aaron, Booker, Lyle’s, KAT. I could only imagine the damage he did with that squad since Cal was 38-0.

It is one thing to have the theoretical understanding of the possibilities, it is another to be able to communicate it. It is great that there is a recording of his instructions before the actual play and then we get to see exactly that play out. He's great at X's and O's but also a feel for how the players are perceiving it. I'm betting that Oweh listens very closely to Pope's future advice.

Oweh waited for Cooper to spin in his direction, he knew he was going to do it and he timed his move perfectly.

Gawd I love having seniors!
Oweh did exactly what he was supposed to do, right after his coach told him EXACTLY what was going to happen.

Mark Pope is a genius people.

Maybe there’s plenty of coaches who can foresee these sort of things, but I’m certain our last coach couldn’t and didn’t.

Agreed, and this is why, along with the players we have, 40/0 and the Natty are both in play.

Pope is highly driven. He hates to lose just like Pitino.

We lost a couple of years ago in the Champions Classic to Michigan St and the end of that game was a coaching clinic against Cal. Izzo drew up two out of bounds plays they scored on and put them in the lead. Cal looked completely lost on the sideline. It was becoming more clear by the game that Cal never did his homework.

You know, I couldn't remember the 2 ot game against MSU they showed in a graphic but now I emphatically remember it because of the two out of bounds plays you mentioned. CRAZY.

I still can't get over the fact that Pope (not once, but twice) told his players exactly what the Duke 'winning' play would be, and how to stop it without getting called for a silly foul (reach in with both hands).

That's championship level coaching right there, which is what we've been missing for so long.

Good on you, coach Pope.

That is exactly the level of
Basketball tactics / info that goes over my head
Understand what you're saying but never notice it happening during game time

The age difference sure jumps out though

This is more a team of men than post pube recruits

Anxious to get back to having mature players fill roles like Winston Bennett, Jamaal Magloire, Chuck Hayes or Derrick Miller

Etc

LIVERHIWTTAM TO CATS!!!!

That's call game preparation from watching film and scouting your opponent. That's what Robic used to do for CCC and what was lacking for the past few seasons. Finally we have a coach that prepares his team properly for opponents tendencies.

Do you think most D1 coaches are more like Cal or more like Pope?

I seriously don't know

Pope almost seems a throwback to Crum, Pitino type hands on, high energy, physical maturity teams

The successful ones are more like Pope. Look at Dan Hurley. He approaches the game much the same way that CMP does, he’s just more of an ******* about it. Dude obviously wins, though.

I'm convinced that Coach Pope knows as much, or even more, than opposing coaches know about the teams we will play. He's that smart and tuned in to every game.
