Completely earned and worth every single penny.

It would have been the easiest thing in the world for Pope and the team to hang it up when we had to start playing our 3rd option at point guard.

Then we had to play our 4th option for multiple stretches lol

Pope made zero excuse, he just made adjustments and kept moving.

Legitimately incredible what he pulled off this season, regardless of what happens next weekend

Regardless of what happens next weekend, this season has been a monumental success and has completely fixed the foundation Cal so thoroughly broke.

How can he get paid 6.25 but only 4.6 is guaranteed ? Is that in case he gets hurt and can’t coach?

I'm all for Pope and hope it continues to work out... but I don't agree with an extension already. I want to see what happens in year 2 and 3...have no idea. This clause would have made more sense if it was final four and not sweet 16.

Another poor barney decision

I'm not worried about the length of contract. Pope will step away if he believes he isn't able to right the ship.

On a year where he came in with zero returning players, where he has UK as far as they have been in 5 years, where he has recruited a great class for next year, he has shown great coaching ability leading UK to marvelous wins…You’re clearly a negative fan. Sorry Mitch made a great, if not supremely lucky hire and Pope has exceeded all realistic expectations by miles.

I think alot is filled in by sponsors. That's why you have Paul Miller Ford ads and all that. Not sure who pays who but media aperances etc makes up a good chunk of contracts

4 coaches this year made the sweet 16 in their first year at their new job. Calipari took over a gmpoor Gillespie squad and made an elite . His first year.... plenty of coaches have made a sweet 16 in their career and then never do anything better. I'm not a negative fan, I just don't agree with how loose UK has been giving out contracts to Cal, Stoops and now pope. Pope would have came here for 3.5 mil a year...we over paid for him already.

Again, as I've stated, I hope none of it matters and he is a rock star for 15 years here and makes some final four and wins us a banner

"first team in 20 years to reach a Sweet 16 without a single scoring contributor from the year before"

another feather in the cap for CMP.

I know Coach Pope wants to be held to a higher standard. And so far, he is delivering. That's all we could ever ask of him or the team. So unlike the underachieving teams of the recent past.

Just gotta get behind him one hundred percent and maybe bust his balls ten percent less, now.

He'll be cool with that, I'd bet. 😉

Go Big Blue !

I'd love to keep his contract at like 4 or 5 years with bonus year incentives to always be at 4 or 5 years left unless he doesn't meet certain requirements. Keep a buyout manageable if things were to go off the rails. No more lifetime contracts or anything above 5 years. Hopefully he voluntarily keeps his pay down some if it will give him a top assistant coaching staff.

I agree with you. His contract says that it can never go above 5 years. I’m not a fan of the Sweet 16 auto extension though, even if it doesn’t go above 5 years.

Maybe have to meet at least 4 requirements out of like 5 or 6 possible to get it. Stuff like:

SEC Title
SEC Tournament Title
NCAA Invite
Sweet Sixteen
Elite Eight
Final Four
Championship

So a Final Four would be like 4 requirements and a bonus year (Invite, S16, E8 and F4) without winning any in the SEC. Championship is 5, and he could get 6 or 7 if he won either/both of the SEC ones. So the worst he could do for an extension is winning both of the SEC Titles and make a Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Easiest way is to go further in the NCAA Tournament. This is just thrown together real quick and could have totally different requirements. Just an example.

If things go sideways and the fans don't want him here anymore, I expect he would walk away. He's not gonna milk us like Cal did.
