Rewatching the game i heard Bilas mention that we went to a 1-3-1 (trap?) towards the end -- and he mentioned the pressure defense similarities to Pitino's "white / black" sets -_ which I THINK were 2-1-2 or 1-2-2 sets??

Anyway - seeing logically placed adjustments and NEW defensive sets + backdoor cuts has been worth the hire of Pope already

also - basketball is FUN again

Plus, experienced players executed the changes they were instructed to make effectively.

We have grown men this year. The Duke kid is super talented. But we all saw what happened to him at clutch time. Hey, tomorrow he might win a game. But he wasn't ready today.
Honestly, Flagg probably learned more from this game than anyone on the floor.

Pope is making me even angrier at Cal. Such an incompetent in-game coach. Just think of what could've been accomplished, with all that talent, had Cal been at least an above average in-game coach. Just the lack of simple things that nearly every coach does.

This entire last few months feels like a TOTAL reversal and course correction for Kentucky basketball.

What took you so long? JK
Anyone who knows basketball has been pi$$ed at the total lack of effort and even less coaching at UK since at least 2015.
Cal got too big for his dam britches and it cost UK a lot of ballgames and pi$$ed off a lot of lifetime fans.
Last night was like a pure breath of fresh air to a dying man for us basketball Bennies.

Ha! Yeah, I was over Cal 2-3 years ago. Which seems to be about the same time as many here. Pope is just exposing, and re-opening our eyes, to just how inept Cal had become. I had moved passed pissed, and had grown numb to it all.

I told my wife when we went into the half this is what I wanted to see. She said but we are down 9. I said yep, now let’s see how our coach and team respond.
On a side note, first time in a long time I yelled at the TV. I had forgotten how fun it can be to get caught up in the game.
I'm totally with you on both the points.

I was also really eager to see what adjustments would be made, and how it would be handled. I was grading Pope more than the team last night. I was pretty happy!

I didn't yell. But I was certainly more animated and emotionally invested than I had been for a while.

THIS is exactly why I was so mad and bitter toward our previous coach the last 7 years or so. We could have had multiple championships during his time had he just put any effort at all into even the most basic coaching.

It was such a waste of so many years and at the expense of a lot of loss of prestige for our program and even a loss of a lot of fans.

Not sure Calipari could even read the verbiage of that tweet, much less muster an attempt at putting any of it into practice mid-game. We basically ran out two different teams / philosophies for the first half compared to the second. Pope is playing chess in-game while a guy like Cal is playing checkers at the kids’ table (or maybe more like fingerpainting).

Cal, at halftime of the game first-round NCAA in which his 3-seed UK team was trailing and eventually lost to 14-seed Oakland, when asked what he would tell his team at halftime: [smiling] "We'll be fine."
Narrator: Turns out, they weren't fine.
