Ok I'm finally back to being a dog owner again. Just got a free dog during a Veteran's Day adoption special from the Kentucky Humane Society. Had trouble getting good pictures with the dog not sitting still for a long while.

His name is Charlie and he is a 2 year old Beagle mix. He pulls on the leash a lot and seems to hate being inside. I guess he spent a lot of time outside in the past and he just paced and whined for probably over an hour before he finally calmed down. Hoping he will get over that. I want to work on trying to get him to not pull the leash so much and learn a few commands. I've never owned a Beagle so any tips are welcome. He loves just playing around in the leaves and just crawling around on the ground outside.

Waiting to go back outside.

After he wore himself out.

Trying to figure out how to get out.

Last picture was him watching TV. My daughter was watching Hey Jessie and he was actually watching it for a few minutes.

Wow Charlie is great! Congrats on your new pal.

I would recommend a training collar to stop him from pulling. As he pulls, the training collar with constrict and he will learn to come back to you to release pressure. The harness thingy Charlie has now encourages dogs to pull more because it's strapped around their strong shoulders like a backpack and they can just pull you along. Beagles can be stubborn and very prey driven, so Charlie might need a little extra practice and encouragement. He looks like a cool little dog.

Charlie is awesome. I'll piggyback off some of what Mash said but here are some tips:

Like Mash said, harnesses are the worst. The do the exact opposite of what people think they do.

Get Charlie a prong collar for when he's on the leash only. They work great when used properly. Maybe look up some videos on how to use it correctly. The goal is to keep him at your side. If he is walking there, make sure there is zero pressure being applied and give him some treats so he knows that's the right spot. If he starts to pull ahead, give a firm but quick tug on the leash (don't pull up and hold) and give him a command like "heel". If he keeps pulling, use a little more force on the correction. When he comes back to your side make sure to praise him and say "good heel" or something like that. He'll get the idea pretty quickly.

Beagles need tons of exercise, especially if he is used to being outside. Of course the best option would be to fence in your back yard and let him run around a lot, but if you can't do that then just play, play, play as much as possible.

Not sure where you are located but there are great dog trainers out there. We did an 8 week course at a place in Etown for $150. We took Benji once a week for 8 weeks, about 90 minutes each session. They are great, he is a different dog now. We learned sit, down, wait, stay, heel, etc.

Well that harness only lasted about 3 days. He tore it up from pulling so hard. Luckily it was a freebie that a friend gave us. For only being 20 pounds, he's about as strong as a ox it seems.

He is bad about wanting to run out the door. That has to stop. You push him back with your foot and he flies right back at the door like a yo yo. Already had to hunt him down after escaping twice. He is always determined to get outside. Usually have to throw a toy down the hall and run out the door while he is distracted.

Definitely going to have to look into obedience training. I know the Kentucky Humane Society has classes for like $80 over 6 weeks and I have a $25 discount for that so I might give them a try and see how it works. Also going to look into a different type of collar/harness. Will read up on the ones you all mentioned.

Hopefully he isn't untrainable because he seems like he is a good dog in general. He hasn't had any accidents yet and he hasn't tore anything up that isn't his so far. I catch him grabbing an occasional sock, but take it from him before he chews on it. Thanks for the tips.

You have to upload it to a site like photobucket and then copy the direct link from the picture and click the landscape looking icon next to the smilie face above where you post and paste it in there.

Beagle tend to howl alot, bet he's going nuts with this supermoon. Grats and G'luck, they are usually one the best breeds for kids.

Actually hardly makes a sound besides whining. He has only howled like once in the house when I was watching a video on Beagles on my tablet and the goofy dog was running around the house barking and howling trying to find the other dog. [laughing]. Barked a few times on walks when he heard other dogs barking in their backyards. Overall though he is very quiet. Took him for his first checkup and got a clean bill of health.

My dog Mugsy is a Jack-a-Bee, like having 2 different dogs.

How can anybody not like a Jack Russell? Check this one out.

And this one...
