Did I just hear Young correctly? Did he say, in response to Lou's question about confidence, "Collins is always screaming at us, 'We're gonna win this game!'"?
Confidence is not always instilled by screaming. Quiet, decisive instructions on, for instance, exactly how to inbound from the baseline to break a press could be more effectual than exhortations for victory.
I believe it was Keith Erickson who said of his years at UCLA that he never heard Coach Wooden speak to his team about winning games. (Yet they won a lot.) In practices and games, Wooden always emphasized specific points of execution. In tight end-of-game situations, he reportedly maintained quiet intensity but didn't yell.
In closing minutes, I'd suggest Collins try turning sideline huddles over to a trusted, experienced assistant coach. That would not be a sign of weakness, but a recognition that a less emotionally charged presence might be helpful. Gee, I wonder if such a person might be available?
The predictable difficulty of inbounding and press-breaking is maddening.
