The list of 64 is based on the 2019-20 enrollment on the IHSA website and includes the changes to the multiplier. That means Benet and ND are in. Simeon and Proviso West are out. The groupings are a total guess. You could literally do this thousands of ways. Whoever does that (who is that?) can easily make his friends happy and his enemies angry. Here it goes:

Southwest:
Lincoln-Way East
Edwardsville
Minooka
Lockport
Joliet West
Bellville East
O'Fallon
Joliet Central

South (I moved LWE out of this on purpose, would be too tough. Will IHSA make such tweaks???)
Marist
Homewood-Flossmoor
Brother Rice
Boilingbrook
Sandburg
Curie
Bloom
Stagg

Near North
Loyola
Maine South
ND
New Trier
Evanston
Glenbrook South
Niles West
Taft

Near West
Glenbard West (Glenbard E would be closer, but tradition...???)
Hinsdale Cent
OPRF
Lyons Town.
York
Leyden
Lane
Morton

Far North
Stevenson
Barrington
Huntley
Warren
McHenry
Dundee-Crown
Zion Benton
Waukegan

Far West
Waub V
West Aurora
Oswego
Oswego East
Plainfield North
Plainfield East
Plainfield South
East Aurora

Northwest

I think the positive effects of scheduling 2 tough openers to balance out a potentially weak district schedule are being overestimated. I know it may be the best that can be done, but games in August to harden a team for November? Realistically, a front-loaded schedule is not nearly as beneficial as some may think.

Dumbest idea ever...

So MS and LA will duke it out every year. Candidly, there's not a school in LA's "District" that can compete with them other than MS and maybe NT.

Maine South, New Trier, Evanston are all respectable 8A programs.

Didn’t say they weren’t “respectable”. This schedule is not nearly as competitive as the CCL Blue year in and year out. Love the MS/LA game, but LA will handily beat the other teams most years.

Most districts are going to be horrible for travel if your a private school.

The list of 64 is based on the 2018 enrollment on the IHSA website.

Understood that the list is based on 2018 enrollment, but it is not based on 2018 playoff results. Not sure about any other schools, but Notre Dame College Prep will be multiplied back up to 8A next year based on reaching the 6A semifinals this year. That puts them in the middle of your Near North district.

Also, you can't just take the top 64 teams and say they are 8A. 8 classes of 64 teams in each class is 512 total teams, and there were substantially more than 512 teams playing 11 man football in 2018. If there are 540 teams, then you need to divide 540 by 8 classes to achieve between 67 and 68 teams per class. Some districts will have to have more than 8 teams.

Will be interesting to see how the IHSA handles having more than 512 football playing schools. I don't see how a 9 team district works since you'd have to have a team off every week (maybe that's acceptable?). Or match up the 9 team districts to play an exhibition game against each other every week. Will they spread out the 9 team districts through all 8 classes or put them all in 1A? Or all in 8A?

I updated the top list to account for the changes in the multiplier and used the 2019-20 enrollment numbers. Benet and ND in. Simeon and Proviso West are out.

People always seem to complain about travel for football. Football has the least amount of travel of any sport. Regular season - 4 or 5 times. No reason to complain.

Simple and infrequent compared to outdoor spring sports that have to deal with constant weather and field conditions.

I agree travel is not even close to a complaint from football parents!I have been involved in football for over 30 yrs I have never heard Hs parents complain about travel 4 days a yr!Better not join travel baseball!!!

Private school CONFERENCES were already horrible for travel...
The most I have traveled these past several years has been one hour each way to a DePaul Prep game. Had a lot longer travel time for some high school baseball games than any football games.

Some of these districts would mean 2 to 3 hour travel each way for some schools. Kids on buses would not be getting home until after midnight or later if played on Friday night.

Just like Mundelein to Chicago Heights in Friday Night traffic. Joliet to Arlington Heights, Kankakee to Woodstock, Aurora to Wilmette.

Granted @LWeastDad there were no overnight stays involved. I understand the Plainfield to Edwardville travel is an issue.

Except you need to charter at least two or three buses for decent sized football teams plus staff and equipment. Just need one bus for most other sports.

Check out a map. Even though Taft is further north of Lane, you might want to consider putting Lane in the North and Taft in the West.

Just for grins, and while you have that map out, start your 8A districts from the far northeast corner of the state and go pretty much straight south and a little west to pick up your first 8 schools so that your first district would look something like this from north to south:
Zion-Benton
Waukegan
Warren
Stevenson
New Trier
Glenbrook South
Loyola
Evanston

Straight west and a little south of there you would have:
McHenry
Dundee Crown
Huntley
Barrington
Fremd
Palatine
Lake Park
Elgin

Followed by
South Elgin
Bartlett
Conant
York
Glenbard N
Glenbard E
Glenbard W
Hinsdale Central

Straight south of your far northeast district would be:
Notre Dame
Niles West
Maine South
Lane
Taft
OPRF
Morton
Leyden

Then you can fill in the rest.

The point is that it basically can go a bunch of different ways depending on where you start drawing districts and in what directions you go from where you start. For example you could start in the far northwest with Huntley and Dundee Crown, and then go mostly straight east and achieve a far north 8A district that looks like this:

Huntley
Dundee Crown
McHenry
Barrington
Stevenson
Warren
Waukegan
Zion-Benton

Thanks for the work but for the Southwest Division all three of the Plainfield High Schools are closer to Bellville East than is LWE. Plainfield South 262, Plainfield North 268, Lockport 268, Plainfield East 270, and LWE 272. I'm sure that people at Lockport and Plainfield North know to the foot who is closer. There's no way LWE travels to the metro East area if the are one inch further especially if your talking Friday nights vs Saturday afternoons.

Food for thought. Where does the IHSA start. North or South? Or both and met in the middle? Northwest or Northeast etc...

I agree. If you had 1000 people look at a map you'd probably get 1,000 different districts. Does anybody have any idea who gets to draw the maps??? Is it done by a computer formula? A CCLer? A public guy? The process is sure to be wrought with politics and problems.

I'd almost say, especially for 8A, it would make sense to base districts off of trying to make them competitively equal and/or preserving rivalries. Barrington going to McHenry or Bolingbrook doesn't really matter. LT should play HC every year, but whether they play their 8th game vs Curie or West Aurora doesn't matter.

This is certainly true. I don't remember the last time Maine East won a conference game.

They beat Maine West probably 6-7 years ago. Funny thing is a bunch of those Maine West coaches who got beat by Maine East ended up going to Maine East a few years later, and promptly lost to Maine West

Old Fox Valley Conference teams McHenry and Dundee Crown will be lucky to see who beats the other for a one win season while Huntley wishes it were still playing 5A & 6A schools.

Huntley is a perfect example of why districts are needed. The FVC has quietly been searching for a way to get Huntley out of the conference. Now Huntley gets to test themselves against football programs of similar profile.
