Well, here I go again. I swear every year I am not going to get sucked in, then I watch a practice, and I am convinced once more. Seriously, I see a great deal of difference this year in talent and coaching. Dammit...they've got me again.

It happens to me every year too. But this year I made a vow to be pessimistic until they prove me wrong. It's better for my blood pressure this way.

I think I heard that Griffin picked Luke Wright, but I could be wrong. Think I also heard Johnson got IT'd, but again, I could be wrong.

I'm more sure about Luke, though.

Thanks, just curious. Think Johnson was picked by McWilson.

Hoping that the lack of media coverage of defense is just because offense is more "interesting" (i.e. new coordinator, new WR coach, dedicated QB coach, talk of Barker improvement, Boom coming back, etc). Seems like most of the story lines were from the offense this off-season.

Stoops said during the interview that both sides competed and made plays. Backs had a few picks, at least one pick-six. Hoping we've improved substantially.

Also remember they weren't in pads... makes it harder to judge a defense

Watched videos and saw pics during the practice. All I saw thereafter (write-ups) were padded players. Completely forgot about this caveat.

Very true. Thanks for pointing that out. Definitely makes a big difference when the defense can't lay a nasty hit or has some reserves about playing full speed.

Welcome back, and congratulations on coming to your senses, just in time.

Seems like an overall positive report very early. I like that football is taken seriously by the staff and players here. Sounds business like

People that big shouldn't run a 4.70 forty. I'm very excited about him. He'll absolutely help our team out.

Look at the size of his arms and how huge he is. Mark Hill was a heck of a hire by Stoops. Might be one of the best hires hes made.

Absolutely. Arrived at 250ish pounds, now up to 275 (per the official roster numbers). He could get up to 280, which is bigger than Za'Darius Smith was his senior year. Add in the fact that Carter is faster than Smith, and as a true freshman, you have a monster on your hands.

We need more of these freaks of nature. Those are the types that can turn a defensive unit from average to really good. It sounds like this kid has the tools to someday be a special player. I know he still has a lot to learn before he can be counted on to produce every game, but sometimes it's just nice to know the tools are there. The game is a lot easier to teach when a kid has the goods. No matter how great of a coach you are, if you don't have the talent, the coaching won't matter. Carter sounds like a great find and i hope we land a few of those guys every class.

King was gone, presumably still dealing with the death of a family member, but Stoops did not want to discuss.

I'll begin my thoughts after Week 2. If we can go into the swamp and get a victory then we have a chance to be 4-0 going to Bama and three very winnable games left in Vandy, Mizzo and Austin Peay. If we are 4-0 then many other games could also get interesting.

Think it was John Clay who said he was running with the 2d team.
Don't forget guys, freshman will get 1st and 2nd team reps so the coaches can get good looks at them. They aren't necessarily 1st or 2nd team til the week before the 1st game.

That's not pessimistic - it's just 'realistic'...

... or so I've heard.

It appears we have X receivers playing both the X and Z positions. LOL. That's gotta be the tallest flanker 3 deep rotation in all of college football.

Curiously, out of all those guys, it would appear Badet is what most would consider a more typical Z receiver (based on size), yet he's at the X instead of Baker. Most coaches place their tallest, strongest receivers at the X. Badet is about 6-0 and 180.
