Go to www.nscorp.com and careers to apply. They're always updating it so keep a eye out if nothing is there now.

HEY ukfan03 does it help that I am a veteran and I am confused on their site as far as job openings and categories. I mean the have a law enforcement category etc... All kinds of off the wall stuff. What are the actual rail road jobs called like conducror and yard? Do they offer training if you come in with no experience? Is 42 years to old? Im not a computer guy and i am confused on this. What are work schedule like if Im on the rail road?

I'm a conductor but as you can see there's a lot of different opportunities. I'll break down the pros and cons of a conductor.

Physically a easy job. To me it's enjoyable. Building trains and switching cars makes time go by fast. You don't have a supervisor standing over your shoulder all day. You're never rushed unless you're just plain sorry and not even trying to do your job. Retirement is great. You can take off work any time you want for the most part. After your first year you'll have 17 days vacation time. After 5 years you'll have 24 days. It just keeps going up the longer you've been there.

The schedule sucks. You'll be on call unless you have seniority on a local assignment. That'll take years. While on call you'll be able to access the computer to see where you stand in being called. Once you've been there a little while you'll be able to guess about when you're getting called based on train schedules. After getting off work you'll have a mandatory 10 hours rest time before they can call you back to work. Starting out you'll be working off a extra list. Basically filling in for people that take off work. You will be taking a train from point a to point b. When you reach your destination you'll stay in a hotel room the company provides. Meal allowance is provided too. You'll usually stay at the hotel between 10-16 hours before getting called on a train to bring back home. Once you get some seniority you can get local jobs where you'll be home daily. The amount of years seniority varies from location to location.

Your guaranteed amount of pay will be approximately 2100$ every two weeks as long as you're available regardless if you work. You can make up to about 2800$ if work is good. A good chunk will go towards retirement, union dues, benefits, etc. Its a 5% 5 - 6 year top out. Being a veteran will definitely help.

No 42 isn't to old. I know guys that was hired in at 50 years old. They will train you. You will be sent to Atlanta for 3 weeks of training. They'll provide a prepaid meal allowance card and hotel. Also will reimburse your mileage.

You're a tough dude with a good heart. Keep your head up. You'll be in my prayers.

By the way, don't let money be what keeps you from checking out your health. Do what it takes to get healthy and then worry about the money later.

Buck if you are currently unemployed I would highly suggest you see if you are eligible for Medicaid. You can go to your local office, or sometimes the hospital will help you apply. Do not be too proud to get assistance. People who are temporarily struggling are exactly the type of people these programs are for.

Also, you mentioned being in the USAF and working in law enforcement and with dogs. My BIL was also in the Air Force as an MP and dog handler. He is currently working for a private security firm in DC and works a ton of NFL and MLB games. If you still have that skill and are looking to relocate, there are lots of those jobs available with the current need for security in our country.

Good luck.

The way our list works is with alternating off days. For example, you will have Saturday and Sunday off this week. Then you will be available to work Monday through Saturday with Sunday and Monday off the following week. Usually you don't work 6 consecutive days. Most of the time it's 5 days a week. When times are slow you might only work 2-3 days a week but still get paid that guaranteed amount.

I don't know anyone from that area. You would be able to get retirement in 20 years. You have to work 30 to get benefits with retirement though. Best of luck.
