A team vote? Maybe we should let the kids vote on should there be homework? Maybe vote to do away with grades and make all classes pass/fail? Any group of players that vote not to try to go out winners learned nothing from football especially any seniors.
I could not agree more. I will write up my thoughts on the game later. On a sad note or happy note for coaches Ray Bugal and Joe Urchak retired from coaching today. Ray coached the D-Line. In the last decade he coached four NFL’ers.

3-6 or 2-7 team typically have those records for a reason. Rita is a combo of injuries, scheduling, and apparently to some of their fans coaching.

Kids choice if they want to continue. 16-17 year kids can make that choice.

Forcing a losing group to play another weak. Like your name is tactics from 1964. I'd love to watch the week of practice for a 2-7 team that voted not to play and you made them.

You take those fresh, soph, & juniors and start training towards a new season.

My cousins on Rices team. They immediately started off-season workouts. He said they had 90+ kids at 6am in the morning. Credits that quick fresh start as a big part of their success this year.

This situation depends on a few variables but let the kids choose.

Like I said. Congrats to Rita and the way it played out for them.

Well if the kids from an established CCL vote not to play in the Prep Bowl than the coaches and the teachers failed at their jobs. PC the coaches never wanted the Prep Bowl because almost all the coaches are part timers and needed to get back to their jobs. And there should be some kid of sanction for forfeiting the game at MC. PC threat was always they'd quit and join the ESCC as did Fenwick when they begged out the Blue conference. Now there no more conference for them to run to.

Good luck tomorrow but last year's decision in my humble opinion was not the right one. "suum cuique"

Yes.
Clearly Rices coaches have failed.

You were around the team, you spent time coaching them, you knew all the injured players.

Like I keep saying their are NO ABSOLUTE answers. But in your opinion their is. So we can agree to disagree.

Well had SR not played in the Prep Bowl I might have gone to the school with a torch and pitch fork. In fact several of us (alumni) talked about this today. Over my lifetime I've been to over 300 games. That palls in comparison to the guy I've sat with for almost the last decade. Doc hit 596 straight games today. There are people who I know that in their life times have given every large donations. A lot of that would dry up if we teach the kids quitting is ok.

I'm 100% in doing whats right for the kids.

Showing up at 6am to workout is a lot different than quitting.

But the 13-0 record doesn't support their decision or commitment either. Ohh wait;)

You ask the group of current rice seniors if they learned how to quit from last year?

Hey I'm a public school guy that happens to be a CCL fan. If wins and losses are the only goal and bragging about it sounds a lot like LWE this year and MS in the not so distant past. I guess fighting the good fight and all that moral courage stuff are just words. But I guess each school is different. How much is BR tuition?

You went off on a on a tangent when I picked LA over BR. It's called creating bulletin broad material. The fact of the matter is BR should win easily tomorrow. Otherwise it's could of should of as how the season will be remembered.

Tangent?

Just simple stated I disagree with LA scoring 31 points against BR.

I asked how many times have you seen Rice play?

I admitted I think the LA vs Rice game is a pickem. 17-14 type of game.

In regards to records / wins and losses are the only thing that matter I agree with you. A lot more matters than the W & L's.

Simply stating Rices success after there decision last year was in backing my opinion that there is no right or wrong way with the decision to play or not play in the prep bowl.

Rita clearly won by finishing as prep bowl champs. 2 different situations that both teams won.

You may be right. Maybe being called quitters put a fire in their belly's. But there is a lot of talent in this years seniors. But I never equated character with wins an losses. I picked Rice to win. But I would not think anything less or more of the kids if they win or lose if they play the game the right way. My godson and my nephew (both BR grads) will be there tomorrow cheering BR. I will tell you they know very few ( just a few) who agree with last years decision. But what do they know they were basketball and baseball players.

So next year if BR is 7-2 and wins a game in the playoffs before losing maybe to LWE ( the greatest team in the known universe) and had a shot at Phillips or Simeon, BR might vote to play in the Prep Bowl playoffs?

Completely agree that character is not defined by wins an losses.

Yes. Every year should be the same.

Rice had a bad season and wanted to put it to rest for numerous reasons. Wanted a fresh start.

It's my opinion that the kids deserve that choice.

I believe 9 out of 10 times they chose to play.

I'm going to enjoy tomorrow and put almost 2 seasons ago to rest.

As far as SR went I’m sure you know from last year about maybe over scheduling. Injuries are a problem for all schools but not much for SR this year. As far as coaching goes Lenti, Mitchell, Cronin could all been on SR’s sidelines this year. But none of them could have made any of the players bigger. Lack of size was SR’s downfall. But there was no quit in them. They game BR a competitive game for being out weighted by 50/60 lbs. per linemen.

As far as coaching goes SR is the luckiest team in the state with 350 offensive coordinators, one in the booth and 349 in stands. Though most teams call the 349 parents and alumni. A lot of parents want the offense geared to feature their son. I’m a fan of gearing the offense to talent of the players on the team that year. You will see more of a classic running game from SR the next three years. There is a freshman who may have stats on par with Billy Marek, Joey Gorman, Wade Weyer or Jahwon Akui. His talents were kind of hidden when they took the three best OL from the freshmen team and played them up on the Sophomore’s.

As far as the rest of your post goes it’s commendable the work ethic the kids had coming out of last year. But let’s face it this year’s BR seniors are the most talented group in the CCL.

Awesome write up! Are there enough footballs to please this freshman, the sophomore, and the returning starter at running back? Doubt an I formation will be the answer, get these guys in space and let them work. Plus a receiver returned a few kicks also who will need the ball. Do these guys play winter sports or spring sports to your knowledge ?

One draw on the Prep Bowl was that you got to play at Solider Field. Bears played Thursday away and have 10 days off I don’t know why it was at Gately yet again.

Plus side was a few grammar school players were at that game yesterday, not knowing much of a difference between the City Championship and State Championship and saw Rita hoist up a trophy after absolutely dismantling a team, that probably said “I’m going to Rita”

Final thoughts on Prep Bowl. All of Taft’s hope was lost early in the 1st quarter when they lost their starting QB to a knee injury. He was tackled about the 5 yard line bring up 4th and 44. I think he lost track of where he was on the field. He was fighting to get past the 5 yard line when he got twisted. I think he thought the five was the goal line. He must have also been their punter because their kicking game was ugly after that. It was also sad their was no paramedic ambulance assigned to “The Mayor’s Prep Bowl”. I can’t wait for this clown of a mayor to be gone.

On a bright note for Taft they had a good sized OL with mobility. The problem was the play calling didn’t utilize that strength. It looked like the skill players were there just to do their own thing. SR tried to give each senior skilled player a TD. Two older guys (older than me) sitting to my left jumped and cheered for a TD late in the first half. Their grandson/grand nephew scored his first varsity TD on his last play of his high school career. If anyone thinks SR was running up the score Taft keep their starters in the whole game. In one 12 play series early in the 3rd quarter SR had 37 different players on the field. The senior punter took a snap at QB and lost three yards. I kind of wonder how bad the teams Taft beat were? A freshman OL lineman started the CCL playoff and Prep Bowl games.

The below linked Tribune article relates how these kids took the Prep Bowl as an opportunity not a punishment:

Initially I was upset that Rice didn't elect to participate in the Prep Bowl last year. However after talking with some coaches it was apparent that a majority of the kids (not the coaches) did not want to continue - their hearts weren't in it, they were down there were a number of kids who were injured (and wanted to heal) and a good number of kids wanted to join their basketball/wrestling teams which they were a part of. For Rice it was their decision and to each their own. As for Rita, it was their call and it worked out good for them. Granted it's sad to see what the Prep Bowl has become.

Should be best record for public vs catholic. That didn’t make state championship!Example Lincoln way east vs notredame, they play week after state championship! The idea would be teams that actually lost in semis would have concellation game!Like wrestle back in wrestling

The IHSA wanted the CCL in the IHSA playoffs (be careful what you wish for). Their feeling was the State Champions may not crack the top of the final season ratings. Better to include them. The CPS and CCL had one stipulation - to keep the Prep Bowl. They are the only two conferences granted a wavier.

If LWE wants to they could always schedule Moeller High School in Ohio or DeLa Salle in California week one. The Prep Bowl my die sometime down the road because CPS football programs are dying. Or if the pin heads vote for District football the Prep Bowl my grow in stature.
