I wish the IHSA would make the last week of July the dead week. Allow practices to start the first Monday In August.

You could then go:

1st Sat: Equipment
Week 2: Intra-Squad
Week 3: Controlled Scrimmage
Week 4: First Game

A controlled scrimmage against another team would be best preparation for week one. You could spend time on special teams, goal line, 3rd down etc with your best kids without wondering what it will actually look like against another team.

I think Ohio does that where they have the controlled scrimmage still. I know before MC played at Moeller they already had played a game and had a controlled scrimmage under their belt and it was MC's first game.

Could not agree more....and this is a subject that I've brought up to the attention of IHSA football coaches statewide and they all seem to agree...and from an overall safety standpoint what better way to judge and eval kids than in a live scrimmage?

Waaaay back when I was playing in NY, we would have a scrimmage with 3 other teams that we didn't play during the season ( no playoffs back then just 9 games) the week before our opener. It was a great opportunity for coaches and players to see what we had and how we stacked up.

Memory is failing, but i sort of remember playing (sitting on bench) in what was called a jamboree, mid 70-'s,. Four teams involved, played a half against two. Pre-season, don't remember many details.
