I read an article this week concerning the proposed new tax law. In the new law, endowments become taxable.

I thought of this and it's impact on small private colleges.

Would this also pertain to high schools? If so, it could be devastating.

Illinois Wesleyan has a $222 million endowment.
Tax on that money will have no impact on the school in your opinion.
I think you are incorrect.

The proposed tax regulation only applies to large endowments, those that have I believe the threshold is $100 MM per student - the Harvards,Yales, and Princetons of the world. The tax is also only on the earnings of the endowment, not the principal amount.
Small colleges and high schools unless they are super well endowed will be exempt.

I read somewhere that it would only affect about 50 schools, so locally Northwestern, U of Chicago and ND would feel it..

Paliakas,

I think you need to check your decimal place on your endowment per student. At $100MM per that would mean Princeton with its roughly 5000 students would need a half a trillion dollar endownment to be subject to tax and NO ONE, not even the Ivy's, MIT etc are close to that yet.

Which High Schools have the biggest endowment? Heard That Iggy has more money in the bank that any Catholic school. But how does that compare to the schools in affluent suburbs. During budget battles in Springfield there were some reports that some Illinois School Districts have tremendous cash reserves.

Harvard has 34.5 billion in the bank. Yale 25 and U of Texas 24. Northwestern 9.6, U of C. 7 and U of I 2.2. Maine South?

The Big "Winner" is likely Mother Mac. The SoM were Real Estate Moguls for decades. Bigger than Rubloff.

I think somewhere around 150 million.
