they are beyond sub par and if anything they need a pay cut. According to a research, over a 25 yr period, Five areas of academic pursuit were measured. In reading, the average home-schooler scored at the 89th percentile; language, 84th percentile; math, 84th percentile; science, 86th percentile; and social studies, 84th percentile. In the core studies (reading, language and math), the average home-schooler scored at the 88th percentile. https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/aug/30/home-schooling-outstanding-results-national-tests/
Plus they work approx 8 months a year so if they want more money get a 2nd job for the remaining 3-4 months. Lord knows I am working 2 jobs

Maybe, but I’ll take that over an uneducated idiot learning to break rules and fall into drugs and possibly end up calling me one day saying his school was shot up.

Schools never initiate changes in the culture. It's changes in culture that impact what goes on in schools. The biggest difference in schools now than 40 years ago when I began my career is the state of the homes kids come from. It's very rare now to have a kid that comes from stable families. Many kids come from situations with absent dads...look up the research on that one guys. Many come from homes with drug and alcohol problems. Many come from impoverished homes. Many come from homes where no one is there to demand compliance with rules; no one to hold kids accountable for doing chores, homework or even being home.

Schools simply deal with what society sends them. The quality of what schools receive now is sorely less than it was forty years ago. I'll go further and say my generation was not the quality of the previous generation when we started our school years.....It's not getting any better and won't until moms and dads decide to be committed to their families.

Homeschool kids and their families are 90% of the time bizarre weirdos, lots of times being some off the wall religion to top it off. Absolutely awful.

The average home schooler is also a weird, unadjusted introvert who is ill equipped to handle the real world.
Some truth to that, but show me where they can’t handle the real world. I’d say most are successful in their careers, just a little weird for sure.

As a student of both (well Public school for only one year before I was sent to Christian Military school)... I don't think the private schools really offer much in the way of academics. They are there for structure and discipline, not so much so for curriculum. If you gave effort, you were generally fine in my school. Whereas public school, the teachers didn't care if my friends were struggling or not.

Weirdly enough the private schools are in some ways better AND worse at prepping you for the real world.

Those weird *** kids don't have a chance socially. Every single homeschooled person I've ever known severely lacks understanding of basic social cues and is cringe-level awkward in a social setting that doesn't involve relatives.

It's child abuse IMO.

Hey Bevin, didn't know you posted on this site. Thought you wouldn't have time since you've been so busy working on getting state workers pensions passed under the disguise of a wastewater bill. Did the Koch brothers approve this message???

Dismantle the dept of education. Seriously. When was it created...the 70s? Were ppl just not able to graduate before it was created?

Put it this way, over 3000 beaurocrats work for the dept of ed making on avg 109k per year. That's 3000×109,000 a year of money you could give back to the states to decide how to spend it on schools. What was the problem Ky was having...oh, no money for pensions. Big govt is a failure and always will be.

My kids rank higher than that in every category.

Our local public schools offer very good academic programs for the smart and gifted kids.

From a personal perspective, the kids who do well in school are typically the same kids whose parents actually give a s*** about them and their schooling.

Yes
A lot of student success depends on effort and parent involvement.

One benefit of private school is that there are fewer knuckleheads there simply because the law requires attendance.

My daughters always take AP classes when possible because there are usually no derelicts in those classes who distract from the students who care about their education.

This is not always true. For prep schools, maybe. But the Christian Brothers/ Military academies take in the kids who get booted out of Public school. That really REALLY bad kid that's not allowed back on public school campus? He goes to the school I went to. If he can't hack it there, it's probably Juve until he's old enough for jail.

It was a weird setup. You had kids who were all about the military, prefect grades, destined for a career in service, probably as a high ranking officer.. then on the other end of the spectrum.. kids who had no place else to go, selling drugs on campus and committing felonys.

I should have said private Christian (CAL/Lexington Catholic) or high end private school(Collegiate/KCD).

Hmm... 30 students to 1 teacher OR 1-2 students to 1 teacher (an article from 9 years ago at that)

Just a fabulous comparison.. awesome to see people coming out of nowhere to comment on things they're clueless about.

It wasn't "disguised" in anything you water head. After Feb 16, no new legislation can be introduced. So in order to pass it, it had to be attached to existing legislation.

There are so many parts to this mess....I didn’t know teachers are mad about stuff other than pensions. They’re mad about budget cuts in general.

For example, Bevin wants to cut family resources. Idk what that is. I asked and a teacher told me “some kids don’t have beds so we buy them beds”. Idk if that’s true. Sounds crazy.

We first need to define what schools are. I think they got too much on their plate.

A good friend of mine attended an upscale private high school in Columbus. He has always been a super nice, easy going guy, but his parents decided he was too impressionable and his last two years of high school should be at a good Christian school that had staff that attended their church. My buddy described it as a last resort option for upper middle class kids to get into a good college, even though they had been kicked out of their last school. He called it a Christ centered concentration camp, with about half the inmates serving time for drug crimes.
His favorite story was about a school party, at which he saw kids snort cocaine for the first time. He was caught bringing a copy of a movie to loan to another kid and was suspended because it was rated R.

Probably true - I've heard they have to buy $100s worth of glue sticks so the kids have something to snack on during class (pink is best). We also have to allow teachers the right to poop during school - ridiculous.

Children born to single mothers where the Dad isn’t in the home is the #1 issue. Unreal that society stopped shunning this. Something like half of children are born out of wedlock, and the majority of them will grow up poor. This isn’t a chicken or the egg thing either. It causes poverty.

That requires personal responsibility, though, and you can't legislate that.

Cat is out of the bag now. Nobody is responsible for their own actions anymore, and the results of that are being put on display over the last few years.

True, those and the only child kids. Only child kids are spoiled, coddled beyond comprehension. We would take bets on 1st kid who wanted mommy to come pick them up at a campout. Never failed

Pink is good, but green is minty fresh.
