It’s a giant leap from “Phil Knight’s family owns 20% of Nike so they have influence” to “spending $ on Nike stuff is essentially funding Oregon’s NIL program”.
If 68 schools (the number Nike has under contract) gave West Shore Homes the exclusive rights to build all on campus apartments for a decade, we wouldn't be high fiving each other here?

If Adidas is a better path for NIL right now, then it’s a great decision.
Well, that "if": therein lies half of the answer you seek. And it is a rather clear one.
(Assuming that by "better path for NIL" you mean greater opportunities for sub-NFL ballplayers to make more money. I assumed that is what you meant, but I may be incorrect. My apologies if so.)

The other half (having nothing to do with "NIL") is even more obvious - and more determinative wrt the "decision".

But, who cares? Really. It is what it is - and this is relatively minor in impact.

This is devastating news. Every year I buy the Penn State Nike sneakers. My Pegasus got here 2 weeks ago and my Air Max Verse arrived today. What am I going to wear next year????

The Adidas ones. I have last year's Nike version. I only wear them during the football season so they should honestly last me years.

Of the three adidas logos, they always use the second worst one. Of those three, I have never seen the one on the right before now and they use the one on the left the most but the middle one is by far the best.

This has nothing to do with "looks" and has everything to do with $$$$. There are reports out there that this deal is worth 4x the amount of money Nike offered and some payment made directly to players. This could be huge for NIL and recruiting.

Would assume something close to Tennessee's deal which is reported (though unconfirmed) at $10mm/year for ten years in cash and product. South Carolina's new Nike deal is $80mm over that same period. I can't imagine Nike is offering 4x less than Adidas for PSU and Nike is far more desirable IMO. If Adidas can do significantly better, I'm all for it. If it's close, I'd stay with Nike. Otherwise we'll look like a$$ on TV for peanuts.

Found more on the USC deal:

WHAT’S IN THE DEAL?

WIS obtained a copy of the term sheet between USC and Nike following Friday’s vote. The 10-year deal includes a $70 million retail allotment, $5 million in cash compensation, as well as $2.5 million in supplementary product allotment and a 15% royalty on net sales.

The terms also state Nike will provide “unique marketing opportunities” along with the following benefits:

  • A’ja Wilson integration: Nike will provide USC basketball with A’ja Wilson signature sneakers with Gamecock-specific colorways to wear on court. The document also states “Nike will also explore A’ja Wilson travel and other team gear for USC women’s basketball during the term” and USC being featured in A’ja Wilson-related marketing.
  • New uniforms
    • Football:Nike states it will outfit the Gamecocks in “its cutting-edge Vapor F.U.S.E. uniforms for the 2026-27 season. The company says this is the same type of uniform worn by NFL teams. Nike also states it will provide new cleats for the Gamecocks’ football team next season.
      • Documents state Nike will provide a special alternate uniform for the Gamecocks “as part of an energy program including more than 15 elite college football programs.”
    • Women’s basketball: The women’s basketball team will also get new uniforms based on the company’s Paris design starting in 2026.
    • Redesigns: Both football and women’s basketball will also receive a full redesign of their respective “uniform closets.”
  • Colonial Life Arena court redesign: As part of the deal, Nike will also lead a redesign of the USC basketball court at Colonial Life Arena.
  • New access: USC and student-athletes will also have access to Nike’s Sport Research Lab at its headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

Ha. Just like Rutgres.

rutgres leads, we follow.

😞

Same shoes and jerseys as Rutgers, but I can guarantee our contract is much more lucrative. They are on the list, but we are at the top of the list.

I just looked at the list of Adidas sponsored college programs. We are by far the most iconic and important sports program listed. That's football, wrestling, vball, and others....not even close! A major coup for Adidas.
Rutgers switched to Nike this year. Tennessee goes to Adidas next year.

Here is the latest Adidas look.

This doesn’t say that though. I haven’t seen any reporting for NIL separate from the overall agreement save ‘unprecedented opportunities’ for athletes. Yahoo has the goods on this - says PSU, Southern Cal, and LSU all thinking about Adidas too.

And there is a loophole here too - UT’s deal with Adidas isn’t with the university - it’s with ‘their newly created University of Tennessee Athletics Foundation (UTAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that contends it is exempt from state public records laws. The Adidas contract appears to mark just the beginning of UTAF’s role as the deal-making proxy and signatory for the university’s athletic department.’

The gist is this is money that can potentially go straight to athletes above and beyond what schools are allowed to pay. So in some ways it is NIL money, but not all of it.

Details on what the deal “could” mean to PSU are available. It is significant. I caveat with “could” because it is obviously not final.

"Unprecedented Opportunities" was apparently the strategic communications buzzword that got the thumbs up 🤣

I guess everyone can have "unprecedented" opportunities - why not? And every brand can be the new "flagship"?

I know that wasn't intended to be a funny statement, but it is.

It is coming up for a Board vote - right? So, it is as "done" as smoking black toast. 100%.
(For those unaware: The Board has never NOT rubber-stamped any proposal)

Fair. I just wanted to be accurate. And, given Paterno’s long relationship with Phil Knight, I would not put it past Jay and that ineffective cabal to at least put up a fight.

Do people truly are if they uniforms are made by Addias or Nike or Under Armour?
I couldn't care less--just take the check
It's not like we're going to become Oregon with 75 different uniforms
I used to care when Joe and Phil were friends and Phil was active at Nike and did some good things in Joe and Sue's names. Now that Joe is gone and Phil is stepping more and more into the background it doesn't matter to me what ensignia is on the jersey, take the one offering the most money and NIL $. Keep the uniforms the same with maybe a throw back once or twice a year.

The lack of Nike money that should be given to PSU helps Oregon with more money for them currently,
or if PSU switches to Adidas is that more money added to Oregon's fund anyway ?

Bottom line money, i don't know what PSU gets from NIke at this time , but the Adidas numbers
if true seem enticing.

Adidas is heavy into European soccer, does anyone know the quality of their footwear? Say football cleats vs.
soccer cleats ?

Isn't the actual truth that there are a number of alternatives and they will be selected by the Board vote? So, it's not an "Adidas? yay or nay" but a "here are the bids of various competitors, select one" vote? I know that may throw a wrench in your latest bit of faux outrage and BoT bashing, but I believe that's the case.

So it appears Oregon signed an agreement with Nike (11years) in 2017. They've been getting about 2.5 million per.....5 million in product.....3 million signing bonus and 15% on Oregon apparel sold. PLUS "student internships."
I wonder what PSU's agreement looked like.

Think the last actual numbers known on the contract are from like ‘93 - $2.6mm over three years. I also thought Joe got payment as well.

We don't know the break down of the proposed deal. Is part of that figure for product...uniforms etc. If so, it's not moving the needle as far as one might imagine. I'd be curious to see Tennessee's deal with Adidas.

Those numbers for PSU are from THIRTY years ago.

WRT Tennessee, I'll save you the "look up":

It is roughly:
$5 Million per year in gear (which, like everyone else, they value at "retail" - so probably $1-2 Million or so in cost to them)
and
$5 Million, give or take, in cash per year.

They, of course (because it has become the current buzzword) announced that they will also be working with Tennessee on "unprecedented opportunities" for NIL.

Where will PSU's deal land? Who knows?

But I would wager a decent amount that the announcement will include statements like "unprecedented NIL opportunities", and contentions that Adidas is absolutely infatuated with PSU and is looking to use PSU as their "flagship"
