PSU moving to Adidas

Those numbers for PSU are from THIRTY years ago.

FWIW: Since Tennessee is not PSU (ie, don't treat everything as a Kremlin-esque state secret) the info is out there.

I'll save you the "look up":

It is roughly:
$5 Million per year in gear (which, like everyone else, they value at "retail" - so probably $1-2 Million or so in cost to them)
and
$5 Million, give or take, in cash per year.

They, of course (because it has become the current buzzword) announced that they will also be working with Tennessee on "unprecedented opportunities" for NIL.

Where's the info?

Oh, and there's this:

Yahoo Sports reported the deal is likely valued at roughly $10 million per year in cash and product, though Tennessee has refused to confirm the financial terms, citing competitive concerns. Unlike the school’s outgoing Nike agreement—or most public university athletic apparel deals—those terms may never be disclosed.

That’s because the agreement is not with the university itself, but with the newly created University of Tennessee Athletics Foundation (UTAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that contends it is exempt from state public records laws.
The Adidas contract appears to mark just the beginning of UTAF’s role as the deal-making proxy and signatory for the university’s athletic department.

Nike sucks.

Bring back Spot-Bilt, Pony, and Converse - all made in the USA.
Nike bought Converse in the early 2000's and moved them overseas. I still wear the All-Stars. New ones have laces so short that you need needle nose pliers to tie them. I have to buy longer laces separately:confused:. I don't think the consumer is first on their mind or they never tried a pair on.

Let's bring back suede while we're at it.

Perhaps it is all about NIL opportunities?

Almost certainly is. I read that Tenn landed or flipped a couple of 5 stars right after signing their new deal with Adidas a couple weeks ago (didn't fact check it). Also a rumor yesterday said Tenn gets $20M a year and the PSU deal is $30M a year for 10 years.

As a consumer, I favor Nike gear over Adidas. I view Adidas as a soccer brand, not a football brand, and just never liked the styling of their clothes as much as the cleaner, simpler Nike look. Per interviews with Spider, PSU helped build Nike into what it is today. We were one of the first to sign with them and they tested gear with PSU athletes before taking it mainstream. Joe and Phil Knight were friends. Nike paid part of Joe's salary. So while in today's era it makes sense just to chase the money, Nike has been a rather large part of PSU's history and relationships and it's sad to see it go.

When is this "approval" taking place? I ask because these morons absolutely will screw this up like they do everything else.

The next BOT meeting. I think it's at the end of next week, probably takes effect next season.

Next meeting Sept 11/12.

Approval is, of course, a fait accompli - whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing. Either way, you needn't lose any sleep over "what will happen" at the BOT meeting.

Thank You for posting that.

I have hesitated to get into some of the obvious "issues" wrt this deal (and those like it).. ESPECIALLY when you are moving away from the - by far - leading spender in PR/Promo/Advertising/and Market Share among any US sportswear providers (Nike domestic spend >>>>>> Adidas (US) domestic spend).

So, if this transition to Adidas is approved would there be a chance if it going into affect this season? If so, Nike would not like one of their new "models" wearing Adidas on or off the field. What would happen then? Nike voids contract?

Assume this wouldn’t take effect until next year but no idea.

Allar would wear a Nike uniform with black tape over the logo like JoePa did with a non-Nike jacket years ago.

Allar will be gone to the NFL by the time it takes effect so it won't be an issue. But I suppose it's possible a player could sign a personal deal with an Adidas competitor at some point in the future. There likely will be a noncompete clause in the the Adidas contract forbidding it though.

Hoping for the best in terms of gear, but precedent is its very average. I guess the upside is we can buy better players.
I have PSU gear from all different manufacturers now that has been purchased from everywhere from State College to online. I think there will still be many options available to us. If the deal allows PSU to buy better players, then 👍🏻👍🏻.

The best WR in the country plays at a Nike school and is sponsored by Adidas.

"Smith joins a strong roster of Adidas football athletes, led by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Jaguars WR/DB Travis Hunter most recently signed with the brand after his Heisman Trophy campaign with Colorado, with Abdul Carter, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Chris Jones, Trevor Lawrence and Michael Penix Jr. also a part of the football roster.

Smith joins former Buckeyes Emeka Egbuka and Garrett Wilson as members of the brand, along with Ohio State commits and Adidas NIL signees Chris Henry Jr. and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt."

Well, so much for getting those sweet script Penn State NIKE jackets Franklin wears. 🙁

Now let’s see what adidas brings!

Nike and Adidas outsource their manufacturing to SE Asia. Overlapping factories, materials, and employees are used. PSU can probably select the material grade at least for unis. I would think with Adidas increased investment, they would want to recoup it in sales. I would expect better designs.
I have Adidas golf shoes, shorts, and shirts. Stylng is pretty good, and very durable. Much more than Nike golf in my experience.
JF has been playing with recruiting talent between 13-15 every year. PSU needs to land a few more impact players. Maybe this money allows us to do that.

I think you might be right about a non-compete agreement.
