Puzzling ……….I‘m surprised that the Iowa match has approx. 1,035 comments and this Northwestern match thread only has 200 comments? 🤔 😉

Has there been an NCAA team, in any sport or any year, that has been more dominant? The only team I can think can come close is the 72-73 UCLA basketball team which went 30-0.
That’s a tough question to answer when you’re comparing two different sports. Rules, scoring, etc are different so it’s hard to make a direct comparison.

However, a more apples to apples question would be whether any of Iowa’s teams under Gable could compare to the recent teams at Penn State. Iowa had some good teams and winning streaks when Gable was coach. How did they stack up? The stats guys should be able to give some solid numbers on this one.

Let's hope slumlard Bob doesn't purchase them in the offseason.
Ol Bob is taking some infrared heat over there.

personally, I think it’s a pretty weird thing to be a big time college athletic booster. Is there not an actual charity that might make better use of your money??

but with that said, it seems just as weird for the non donor class to ***** about it.

The Brands got the 3” binder but couldn’t understand what they were looking at so they reverted back to the Gable binder from 1975. They need to hire a couple former PSU wrestlers as assistants so they can explain modern wrestling theory to them.
Gable I'm sure gets pissed off when people say that. Iowa has nobody who wrestles like a Gable trained wrestler. Gable wrestlers did push and shove, and when they got you to the edge they would shoot driving you off the mat. They also would beat you to death with handfighting, but they scored takedowns and offensive points.
Iowa hasn't had a Gable looking dude since Metcalf. I can't even label Spencer as a Gable looking athlete, Gable would have never tolerated Spencer's conditioning.

Props to Northwestern who came to wrestle. Have always been impressed with Storniolo as a coach. He always gets a lot out of his team and has had quite a few AAs at a tough school to recruit and retain talent at. I promise you, he would get much more out of the Iowa roster than Brands does. #PAStrong

Years ago Gable put a mat together around 64 feet in diameter to prevent Oklahoma State from working the edge.
I think they called mat ,Big Bertha??
Kurdelmeier was the coach who ordered that mat and is was used for a meet against Oklahoma.

I bet Gable absolutely adored Cory Clark winning a title with one arm Frankensteined onto his body.

Question, JB said this is one of the smallest mats we will see. My wife said she thought all mats were the same size. I always assumed the circle was the same but the rest after the circle could differ.
What is the rule, can the circles be different sizes?

Yes, it can be anywhere in the 32-42 ft diameter range.

The actual rule is that the mat must be at least 42x42 ft, up to 52x52 ft, with a 5-ft padded protection area from the circle to the edge of the mat.

@El-Jefe got the rules correct. To give it a tad more context, I'll offer this.

Mats are expensive. While the NCAA would prefer that every institution uses a larger mat (52X52), they don't want to force smaller programs to have to purchase a new mat. Plus, they are aware that some smaller arenas, where some of the smaller programs compete, really don't have enough space for 52x52, plus the required 5 feet from the edge of the mat to anything (tables, bleachers, wrestler seating, walls) that could be considered dangerous to the competitors. So, they've been forced to compromise, and provide minimum and maximum sizes of mats, so that all NCAA programs can use their existing maps, and hope that if/when they purchase their next map, they'll purchase a larger one (if the arena/competition site allows for such).

Mat costs, and competition site limitations, are an even bigger issue in high schools and middle schools. That's why the out-of-bound rules that the NCAA adopted were slow to be (and still not fully) adopted by the NFHS, which sets rules for high school & middle school.

Another factor is tournaments. Some schools might be able to trot out a bigger mat for duals but not have space for 4-6 big mats.

Oooh. Ouch! There’s a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct! This is a great sport and every college wrestler deserves our respect for getting on the mat to scrap. Northwestern has numerous issues with their wrestling program, not dissimilar to what PSU experiences with Basketball and Indiana with football (oops). Matt stands up to adversity and coaches his guys to get the most out of what they bring to the sport. Thats nothing to be embarrassed about.

Sure, let McEnelly beat Ferrari in the B10 semis. Let Welsh only have to face one of them at B10s.

Looking ahead to NCAA seeding: the top 4 seeds will be Welsh, Sinclair, Ferrari, and McEnelly in some order. Welsh beat Ferrari, does not face the other 2 in the regular season. Ferrari beat Sinclair. Sinclair beat McEnelly. Ferrari and McEnelly face on 1/30.

Welsh or Ferrari would be the 1 seed at nationals by winning B10s, with Ferrari on the other side with the B10 runner-up. If McEnelly wins B10s, then Sinclair gets the 1, and the B10 finalsts get the 2 and 3 seeds.
I think Fishback will have something to say about who are the top 4 seeds
