Does our dominance help or hurt the sport? Serious question. I know we all love this program but is it bad for the sport to have 1 program dominate like this?
I talked to guy a couple of weeks ago who truly is a fan of wrestling. His son was a dominating high school wrestler who had a decent college career. He goes to a lot of Lehigh matches. He said he thought that Penn State has really hurt the sport overall with it dominance. He truly doesn't have any issue with Penn State but said part of the enjoyment of watching any sporting event is the idea that there could be a team pulling off an upset and winning.
I know us Penn State fans are enjoying it , however I can see an outsider having those feelings.

Has anyone heard a peep from Tan Tom? I saw him on screen yesterday, but haven’t heard a from him before or after match?

This is the most outspoken proponent of duals and before and after the biggest dual..silence?

Not how we would have handled it…
Yes. He did speak to the media afterwards.

while he did acknowledge the fact that each of his guys had a chance to win and he thought he would win 125, 133 and 285….he said this ******** line…”.we head our least potent team….”

That story line is a fact but complete BS on what happened. The 3 missing starters would have gone 1-2 maximum and maybe 0-3. Little to no change in the outcome but a few less points on our side. The optics would have been 100% the same. For him and frankly the sportswriters to inject this into the story is 100% bullshite.

Hawaii is expensive. And, my tolerance for spending on events seems to have changed, so the credit cards are getting a workout. ;)
Years ago I went to Hawaii shortly after we were married for a conference. Stayed a couple extra days at the swanky Princeville hotel on Kauai. The Friday night before departure we went to dinner offsite and the restaurant told me my card had maxed out. Didn’t seem possible so I gave them another and decided I’d call the bank on (then) Saturday morning east coast time to clear it up.

so at like 2 am I get I call them, and they tell me I’m thousands of dollars over my limit, and I tell them that’s impossible But now I’m starting to worry about getting home on my flight that day. Amazingly, the bank says don’t sweat it, we’ll just raise your limit to get you out of there. (!)

so about a week after I got back I got a call from the bank. They tell me that on departure day, when the princeville hotel had processed my charges in anticipation of checkout, there was a glitch at a bank of Hawaii processing switch, and that on that day, for many cardholders, every transaction had been processed 10x.

There is some truth to that.

Here is something else: We won 4 matches in epic fashion. 3 freshman put on a show. That’s not because Cael brings in some of top recruits, it’s because he has his competitors wrestling with house money. It simply doesn’t matter if they fall behind or lose. Just go do your thing.

That match last night was damned exciting on every level.

They have a very good team. Maybe not as good as 2018, but very solid. Maybe not as good as their NC team, but that might be Tom’s 3rd best team ever. Ryan and staff should be very proud of the guys……..they all wrestled hard and were very good. The final score doesn’t reflect how tight some of those matches were. 3 OtmT , one last second with 3 starters out. Gritty. I liked their intensity.

Exciting finish for Rocco. But frustrated with him trying to get out from bottom and letting Fishback rack up riding time early in the match. Why the hell didn't he establish hand control and lower his hips and hip out? That is basic wrestling. He was standing up and not even touching his opponents hands. And then just letting Fishback push him to the edge of the mat. Great finish and outcome, but not sure it had to even get to that.

Their own fault. Pre season exhibitions can be taxing.
Oklahoma St seems to be doing OK despite competing in the same event. Difference being Ohio State was in post season shape and Oklahoma St was in beginning of the season shape using the competition as a season building block.
The wear and tear of beginning the season in such peak conditioning and then trying to build onto that is Iowa level physical stress.

You're right but he didn't seem sharp at all. For a guy with his defense he was super easy to finish on.
He wasn't super easy to finish on since he only gave up one takedown, but he did give up his legs a lot easier than any match so far this year. I think this match was a big hurdle for him mentally if the stories of how Tan Tom handled him and the redshirt situation are true. You could tell it was a BIG relief when his hand was raised.

More importantly he used a lot of energy getting up each time. Which could have and will hurt him in the 3rd with a better opponent.

Two months ago, on December 15th, Flo’s rankings were:

1. Ohio State
2. Iowa
3. Penn State

Some of us that questioned these rankings were lectured on how rankings worked.

Penn State then beat Iowa 32-3 and Ohio State 36-5.

Maybe the problem wasn’t with those of us that questioned Flo’s rankings.
But, Flo got a huge amount of clicks because of those rankings. That's how those rankings work. Those rankings and Flo's participation on our board generated a ton traffic for Flo. Nothing wrong with that.

Not true. Posted earlier Blaze should get the #1 with the win tonight and his strength of schedule. I also picked him to win and NCAA title this year before the season started. Not many here were doing that in October. What a hater 🤷
Goes back to my point about rankings.
It’s human and not a data-driven.
The reason is because humans get to decide which data to use. The fact that we don’t know yet explains why it’s a human thing.

Even if you create an objective algorithm in which we could with 100% certainty say Blaze is new #1, humans got to decide the algorithm.

I was thinking the same thing; WTF was he doing with his escape strategy? I was watching on a delay and starting the second period I just figured Fishback was going to ride him out the rest of the match for the win. So, I fast forwarded and caught Rocco taking him down. So, I rewound to watch the rest of the match. Terrible match for him, but he found a way to win.

Was it just me, or did Fishback look HUGE - like he had 20lbs. on Rocco?

Even if you say Stiles loses by Dec, cannon wins & Kharchla wins it's 22-11 right?
I can understand an Ohio State fan believing Cannon might win, but Kharchla? I get last year's match Kharchla scored a TD and was leading most of the match until it mattered and as expected Levi took him down. Levi has finished 2, 1, 3 and Kharchla hasn't, and there is a reason. Levi is just way better.
So if OSU has those 3 wrestlers and OSU gets best results it is still 25 - 8. In reality, if OSU has those 3 wrestlers the final is still 29-5.

Our thoughts on issues and topics are all shaped by where we stand. Perspective is the villain, if you will. The ref says the last sec move is a takedown that wins the match. Your reaction is shaped by your rooting interest. The ref is great or he's a bum. Perspective determines. Would the same "guy" want his "dominating high school wrestler" to have been less dominating in order to keep up sporting interest? I think not. And for those wanting a less dominant PSU, that will occur someday, but hopefully that day is not near.

That was bizarre. 4 restarts without apparently even trying to gain wrist control. Not many escapes happen without it.

Blaze/Davino is a lot like Dake/Taylor. Usually that's going to lean ever so slightly toward Blaze/Dake ..but it's razor thin and the learning curve here for the first match is for Marcus to be more active in the first 5 minutes to either get that takedown or stay clear of getting dinged, which could have happened there in the first one.

With that said there is no way Byrd deserves the 1 seed in two weeks and the only person who thinks so is our new resident hater Corby, who I am now calling MSU157 😂
Undefeated defending champ who has toed the line for every match - nope, I think Byrd is Big10 1st seed also.

About the Hodge he says:
"We don’t think about and worry about stuff like the Hodge trophy, right? I mean, we didn’t advertise our camps in there again this year, so we probably don’t have a chance of winning. That’s what we were thinking last year. Didn’t really understand how that works.
But, yeah, we’re not worried about that stuff, because those are just a bunch of votes and opinions. And in the past, we have three guys on the ballot getting voted against, splitting our votes and stuff. So it’s just kind of; they got to figure that one out, I think. But we’re not worried about it. I mean, obviously, you bring that up, and so it kind of like strikes a chord with me a little bit, because we should have some guys that have Hodge trophies in the past. But, whatever."

This is what I am saying in an earlier post. The lack of the three starters is a fact of the story. But the fact is in order for OSU to win, they had to win 125,133 and HWT.

the match was over before Shayne Ness took the mat. THATS the story. 3 bouts in and our streak was alive.

Key for our wrestlers and Coaching staff now. Do not eat the Rat poison. Phrase by Nick Saban. Keep working hard and don’t pay attention to Rankings. The Real season starts at the Big Ten Tournament in the BJC. It’s going to be Insane intensity. Can’t wait.

In 1974 Wade Schalles, a 158 lb wrestler for Clarion, went up two weight classes to wrestle Floyd Hitchcock of Bloomsburg at 177 lbs in the PSAC Wrestling Championship Tournament.

Schalles PINNED Hitchcock and was voted the most outstanding wrestler award for his achievement.

Schalles was ineligible to wrestle in the NCAA DI wrestling tournament because of an NCAA violation he incurred.

Hitchcock not only won the National Championship at 177 lbs, but he was also named THE MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER for the tournament
I would argue Wade is unlike "ANYBODY ELSE" and should never be used as an example of a likely reoccurance.

The NCAA violation was he registered for a summer class at East Stroudsburg University before enrolling at Clarion. Just another example of "see, the NCAA has been stupid for a very long time"

Rocco may have gassed Fishback from the bottom.
Probably wasn't the plan, but it worked out.
