Reflecting on last night’s dual:

- Beating Ohio State by 31 points is insane.

- Penn State won all three matches that were tied at the end of regulation and a 4th that was decided by just one point.

- Penn State won matches against Ohio State wrestlers ranked #2, #2 and #3 (at 125, 133 and HWT, respectively). That had to be demoralizing for TR.

- Five bonus wins; Nine bonus points. Against a team that had steamrolled some pretty great opponents.

I talked to guy a couple of weeks ago who truly is a fan of wrestling. His son was a dominating high school wrestler who had a decent college career. He goes to a lot of Lehigh matches. He said he thought that Penn State has really hurt the sport overall with it dominance. He truly doesn't have any issue with Penn State but said part of the enjoyment of watching any sporting event is the idea that there could be a team pulling off an upset and winning.
I know us Penn State fans are enjoying it , however I can see an outsider having those feelings.
He's wrong. Sparks said last night on the broadcast that several venues arund the B10 broke attendance records this year. Before tOSU had 3 ranked wrestlers out tonight there were a pile of tightly contested matches thay could've gone either way. Every wrestler, team, coach, and fan want to be the ones to slay the dragon (PSU). People aren't packing arenas because PSU has ruined anything. If he goes to a bunch of Lehigh matches he's probably just jealous.

Cael Sanderson: "Unless you continually work, evolve, and innovate, you'll learn a quick and painful lesson from someone who has."

Apparently, no one was paying attention, and now they have to deal with the consequences. Ok St got the message; I think we will see a few other schools make similar moves.

Exactly. If the rest of the wrestling world continues to allow themselves to be the red-headed stepchild to Penn State in an era of NIL and unlimited scholarships (well, 30 versus 9.9), then that's on them. What's Penn State supposed to do, dumb down their game to level the playing field? At some point it will become obvious to the other coaches (even those who are not PSU wrestlers/alumnae) what the secret sauce is, since most casual fans can see a lot of it ourselves without a ton of thought (always trying to improve, being willing to take risks in a match even if it DOES cause you to be scored on, top conditioning meant to peak at or around tournament time, willingness to take a loss if you learn from it, not destroying your body or taking undue risks early in the season, etc. etc.). I'm fine with PSU dominating until or unless some of these other schools learn to compete more effectively. That's on them, not on us.

Yes, we most certainly do. What was even funnier was that WIN Magazine editor Tristan Warner was sitting right in the front row, in a WIN pullover, as Cael was ranting about that. We all had a good laugh after the presser wrapped up.
That's awesome. Cael usually throws something out there that you can take one way or the other. This one was direct and it made me laugh. WIN has become a joke all around

They had 3 backups and 2 or 3 OT matches. I'd have to say good win but much closer than you think.

If other schools see the intensity Nick Lee had during the match, Nick will have to throw away a lot of bags of money to stay at PSU. (Which he just might do) That dude was definitely LTFI. Look for it if you rewatch

Going to be interesting to see if all of our top competitors sign up for the National Duals again next year.

Fishback only finished once. Welsh walked right into what, 4 shots though. Welsh was the stalker, Fishback was simply circling backwards and on the 2nd or maybe 3rd retreat step all he did was lower his level while Rocco stepped so far into Fishback it looked like Fihback was lighting quick. I thought Welsh was great fighting out of those shots.
We all praise Rocco for being more aggressive and shooting more than he did 2 years ago. Last night that approach darn near bit him in the butt. He needs to to be the stalker, but he can't maintain a high position and repeatedly step straight into a retreater. Fishback retreating and lower offense is way more insidious than Ferrari's drop to knee and lean backwards looking to pounch approach.
Anyhow, when crunch time showed up Rocco kind of said the heck with subtleties and just snapped Fishback down and sprinted behind him. He certainly did not appear tired.
Almost like a practice that a decent coach might help him adjust during nationals. Just being cheeky and looking forward to Natty's

Cael postmatch news conference video is now live... stick around for the Hodge Trophy rant:

In regard to what Cael says about split voting for Hodge —- perhaps they should use
Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV) where a single school (Penn State) has 3 wrestlers with good chances for a Hodge. RCV lets voters rank all candidates (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th). If no one gets a majority of first-choice votes, the lowest-ranked is eliminated, and their votes redistribute to the next preferences until a majority winner emerges. This prevents splitting: supporters of the three from one school can rank their top pick first and peers second/third, consolidating behind the best without wasting votes on the outsider. It’s used in elections worldwide (e.g., Australia, Maine) to mitigate exactly this issue

By far the weirdest psu match I've watched in the last 10 years.

technique beats strength just ask bouzakis and if anyone thinks PSU wrestlers aren't strong well think again!
Lilledahl beat Bouzakis primarily because he's quicker and has a bigger gas tank. I'm guessing Lilledahl is also shockingly strong (Blaze, even more), I don't recall ever seeing him really being manhandled (like what happens to Mirasola, in every single loss). If strength wasn't that big of an advantage in wrestling, Cole Mirasola might be the favorite for the NC this season.

FWIW, I love when guys try to say strength is irrelevant in BJJ and then they get one of these guys - https://byucougars.com/sports/football/roster/player/handsome-tanielu or https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/fighters/234480-patrick-mailata (two of my former training partners, who suck at grappling) - in an armbar and they just 1-arm curl their entire body.

Hey guys, I'm sitting in Honolulu airport, waiting for my flight to the Big Island. Enough with the B1G Live, let's get to the wrestling (before they call me to board).
The big island is my favorite. Lots of things to see including - maybe - a volcanic eruption. The west side is dry while the east side (where Hilo Is) is lush tropical paradise. I like the dry side from Kona up to Waikoloa Village. Enjoy.
