PSU vs USC.

Lynn also should know a lot about Riley’s offense and how to defend it, but that doesn’t matter if you have a bunch of apathetic and/or overmatched players. Remember that USC has been a very underwhelming team in Big 10 road games, even against mediocre and poor teams.
But we have a coach who doesn't need elite rated recruits. He finds diamonds in the rough that no other coach in America can discover and then he coaches em up. He is superior in every way, especially in game coaching to the previous regime. How quickly we all forget.

And he never changed up his defense to slow down the NW run game until late in the game when there was no way PSU could pull it out. So should we expect no adjustments against USC?
Imagine how bad things could have been if the brilliant moves to bring in behemoth, run stuffing defensive tackles hadn't occurred? No tinier athletic DTs like Franklin gave us. I also see the positive results (as per Tengwall) of players having input in game planning and short practices.

D'anton Lynn is a very good example of someone prematurely promoted into a position far beyond their capabilities only because of their last name and the achievements of their fathers. Others in this category are Rookie Becht and Jay Paterno.
What incisive comment. Everyone here, including every podcast generator and PSU industry connected analyst, gushed all off season about how brilliant Lynn was. Was he prematurely promoted at UCLA and USC? LOL Fanboy love is so fleeting.

It's easy to blame the coaches, but the problem is much bigger. There is a lack of talent on both sides of the ball. I don't think there are a lot of kids on the roster who will be drafted by NFL teams.
I wonder what number registered on the Richter Scale when all the PSU fanboys jumped off the Matt Campbell bandwagon? Lot's of seats will be filled if PSU wins Saturday night. So it goes in the life of a fanboy.

You are 100% correct. But when a similar issue was raised in the Franklin era, the response was "and who is responsible for bringing them here?"

Franklin left the team in a really bad spot. The lack of depth at linbacker last year was inexcusable. It's too much to ask of anyone to dig the program out in less than a year. If the NIL situation doesn't change, I don't know if it is even possible.

I'm truly amazed that people have no problems with Kraft/Campbell given that we're spending more profligate than under Franklin, but with a wildly inferior roster. Paying-up for a crappier roster -- not sure how that's "Excellence" and going to lead to "Championship Football".

Va Tech lost because they were even in a situation that they need a kick to win. Even James said they didn't lose because of the kick. Here you go:

“Everyone is going to focus on the last play. This isn’t coach speak, but we’re going to watch this tape and there are going to be 20 plays that we could have made to put us in a better position and not be in that situation at the end.”

He's right--Grunk and others had a far bigger impact on the loss than the kicker.

Grunk was better than Becht on Friday--and??? He still wasn't good enough. He's the primary reason they were trailing and lost.

Shouldn't we compare Franklin and MC after 12 years? Not what one accomplished in over a decade vs 5 games? He beat SMU and Boise State in the playoff--let's be real about the accomplishment. I mean, come on. I'm not giving MC credit for beating bad teams. What is Franklin's record vs Ohio State? Michigan? Basically any quality opponent.? The first game at Va Tech against someone with a pulse they lost at home.

Who said MC was going to be superior in year one? The hope is he grows into what Franklin proved he couldn't. If MC doesn't then we move on but that doesn't alter Franklin had to go

Also, did anyone here want MC as their top choice--some of us aren't just going to blame him for hire and give him 3 years to build something. You know--logical
Let the apology tour continue. Campbell coached a DECADE at ISU before getting the PSU gig; he isn’t some former assistant coach coaching his first season. LOTS of people on this board REPEATEDLY said on this board preseason that Campbell was an upgrade over Franklin who can coach up those 3 stars. You can denigrate Franklin’s Big Ten Championships and two playoff wins all you want but Campbell won ZERO championships and qualified for the same number of playoff games at ISU. I watched a little of the OSU game on Saturday and the announcer mentioned that Day had the highest winning percentage of any coach since 1936; that’s right 1936. So with the exception of Michigan recently, Indiana last year and yes Franklin in 2016 who else is besting your OSU yardstick? Franklin’s comments were clearly coach speak designed to not throw his kicker under the bus.

It doesn’t matter what defense Lynn calls if the players get pushed around, play with no energy and passion and then quit.
The front end of the D is not up to Big Ten standards. the front four get pushed around. Adding a LBer to the mix would help or bringing up a Safety to help fill a LB roll would help. Essentially a disguised 4-4 D too stuff the run. They have to find a fix there or we will get run over as we watch the clock disappear during the game. They will also have to play more man with the corners.

VaTech lost because a kicker who was 61 for 71 missed a makeable FG with 3 seconds left despite 4 turnovers (not like being the beneficiary of 3 turnovers including a pick 6 and blowing a 17 point lead). Pitt’s back up
QB was easily better than Becht. You can rail all you want about Franklin but at least he has accomplishments on his resume like a Big Ten Championship and two playoff wins. Meanwhile, I am waiting for the allegedly “superior” coach to win a single Big Ten game.

All those people should be dead to us. As for new coaches Terry Smith was the no brain necessary choice at least for one year.

Funny we saw none of these excuses all off season or the first 3 games. We make them up as we go along. I wonder how long people will be foolish enough to blame Franklin for the disgusting mess.

One thing for sure, Franklin never put a putrid product like this on the field - completely uncompetitive against a mediocre, mid-tier b1g team. Quite to the contrary, Franklin's teams were always competitive regardless of opponent which typically included a couple Top 5 Nationally opponents a year. Campbell has put a vastly inferior product with a larger roster than Franklin!

They weren't. If Grunk doesn't give away points they don't need that kick
Why are we discussing Day?
Franklin didn't win the SEC at Vandy...should I have considered that when he was my top choice to replace Bill?
I'm not sure who said he was an upgrade other than chumbo...the hope is he becomes an upgrade. James had to go. MC wasn't my top choice or close to it but it doesn't alter we needed a change

Numerous posters on here claimed Campbell was an upgrade but of course that doesn’t comport with your narrative. We are discussing Day because Franklin was fired in large part because he couldn’t beat OSU. I hope Campbell wins all those Big and National Championships Kraft said the fans deserved but right now I would settle for putting a competitive team on the field and any win against a Big Ten team. I don’t hold Campbell’s lack of winning a championship against him.

It was confirmed by the BWI live show today that Goodman has a run / pass tell. People are saying elsewhere that it’s a completely obvious tell . Need to clean that up immediately. It doesn’t explain all of our incompetence nor does it explain Rocco’s ineptitude, but it does certainly explain a lot of our incompetence, especially with the run game. This happened to PSU a few years back vs Villanova. It also happened with Oregon this year in their loss to Ok St. sports media, not their coaching staff discovered it there.

I would not say this "does certainly explain a lot of our incompetence, especially with the run game".

Probably some but not a lot. We are still lousy even if Goodman is not telling.

Becht has to play better and we have to get tougher and smarter on D with better schemes. These are the keys.

If the defense knows run versus pass each play, that certainly has a huge impact.

Typical of the type of stuff - usually 99.9% horse crap - that come from the sports media propos at times like this.
And likely "explains" nothing (or next to it)

The Oregon one is especially LOL-able (if true). Certainly has nothing to do with how Okla St ran roughshod over the Oregon D as if they were wet paper. LOL

No it doesn't explain how OK St dominated the UO defense, but this story was legit. It was confirmed by Eric Morris.
