PSU has three games remaining: MSU today, then Nebby, then us.

Projections have them going on a two-game winning streak wanting
to wipe away some of the sour taste of the season by whipping
weak-sister RU and ending the season on a three game win streak.

I don't want them to come in having lost to MSU and Nebby
defiant that they're not gonna end their B1G season winless.

I'd like them to win today and lose to Nebby,
entering Rutgers sick of the whole damned season.

Probably is the best case scenario for us morale wise. Beat MSU and lose to Nebby

College players play each game their hardest. So, being up or down isn’t going to matter. But if they have no shot at a bowl- a lot of those better players may just sit.

Maldonado- if they have no are 0-8 coming in- they may just be what their record is.

If they beat Nebraska at Beaver Stadium--which I think they will (Raiola out for Nebby and, unfortunately, state penn is still loaded with Top 10-15 talent)--they will play their azzes off to 1) NOT lose to RU and 2) qualify for a bowl, in that order.
Shelby is sure PSU cares 1000x more about going bowling than who they beat in the last game.

The question is whether RU's swiss cheese defense can keep PSU's detached buttocks out of the end zone.

I doubt that many on this PSU team care about a bowl. A good chunk of the team would opt out, and a December trip to Detroit excites no one. Winning the game will be what is important to them.

Agree to disagree. To them Rutgers isn’t any different than any other low Big10 opponent. They don’t want to be the team to break the bowl streak. Wanting to win = wanting a bowl

Players that are on the field play to win every game even if they are 1-10...Now, the difference is, which players take the field.

If they have no shot at a bowl- I do think some kids moving on to the draft or portal, may opt out of playing it. If they have a shot at a bowl, I think they do play as they would not want to be the team not to make one.

They key to this game is going to sit on our guys stopping the running game. We haven't stopped anyone so far, so that is a big ask. We also need top notch in game coaching. PSU has a really good defense but can we take advantage of how well our WR's have been playing? Or are we going to just try to run the ball up the gut like Greg likes to do in these games to try to keep their offense off the field? If we go with the latter, we will lose unless Raymond goes for 200+ yards again. This is where Greg frustrates me, he has not ever just gone balls out to win one of these games- he plays not to lose and hopes something breaks our way.

This is finally a year to go balls out on these games- our defense is the worst in the country, so, we are not able to hope to win a 20-17 type game. But, we have a QB who has thrown for the most yards in the B1G and also manages a game very well. We have a WR advantage over almost everyone. We have a RB who can dominate. So- why not try to make it a shootout?

Shelby agrees, but that’s just not his philosophy.

The problem is that Schiano is game planning as if he has a lights out defense when he is far from having one.

As has been said, our best chance to beat Penn State is if they lose to Nebraska on Saturday. Nothing else is nearly as important.

The next biggest factor is coming out of Ohio State healthy. If we are down 35+ points in the 4th quarter, I'm going to be fairly annoyed if we are still playing starters.

No - it’s different. I think losing to Rutgers. a bigger embarrassment to them than say a loss to Michigan State this week would’ve been (and Mich State prob worse than us). They don’t view us as rival, but we’re the local team aspiring for them to be the rival.

Compare it maybe to how WVU would feel losing to Marshall or something. Im sure they’d rather get upset by a MAC team than take a loss to the Herd.

Nah. You said it yourself. Rutgers isn’t a rival. Playing Rutgers is no different than playing other bottom half conference teams. There’s no added juice.

The added juice is in playing for bowl eligibility if they beat Rhule. It’s been an eternity since they didn’t make a bowl and keeping the streak matters much more than their opponent on 11.29.

Your analogy fails because those WVU examples aren’t in the Big12 and are in lower conferences. Different dynamic.

It’s not “juice” - it’s the flip side. I also think the idea of losing to Rutgers is worse sadly than any of the other bottom teams as a stand alone. Michigan fired their coach over it. I really don’t think they care about the bowl game. Most of their players won’t play in the game. Their fans probably won’t go to watch it either unless it’s at Yankee stadium.

That’s what juice is. Extra motivation. There is no extra motivation because the opponent is Rutgers. The motivation lies in the bowl streak.

A better analogy than yours would be if UNC were 5-6 needing a win for a bowl. The players wouldn’t care any more or less if the opponent were NC State (rival) or Syracuse. What they do care more about is playing another game.

Also, you are way off about players skipping. They will all play. Some might skip a bowl like Miami’s did in the Pinstripe, but making a bowl game matters to the players and coaches.

Lol I think Shelby would be absolutely devastated when her beloved NittWits lose to Rutgers next week. I know for a fact you don’t care about a meaningless detroit bowl more than beating Rutgers, your most hated rival

Ouch Dave. Hurts bad. Shelby cares, but it is true that PSU fans don’t care about the participation bowl. But the coaches and players do.

It’s not like there is some crazy bowl streak on the line. It’s only an “eternity” if you consider 2020 when we last missed a bowl an eternity ago.

I am thinking they just don't want to be remembered as a PSU team with a losing record. When was their last losing record - COVID season, which was a throwaway?

Covid season was 4-5 (started 0-5, won last 4). Otherwise, 2004, 2003, 2001, and 2000.
