I know its early to make predictions, but Brother Rice and Marist have agreed to once again play each other, this year being at Soldier Field. With both teams coming off strong seasons in 15' and bringing back D1 athletes, who is the favorite to win this game right now? Think both teams destiny could be controlled by this week 1 match up with tough schedules coming with the remainder of year. Thoughts?

Rice's qb and wr opposite of Smalling are the x factors on offense. We know Smalling will see double coverage on most places and even triple unless Borrelli has someone else to throw to.

Off topic, Rice grad Martez Walker has left Central Michigan and is enrolled at St. Joe's in Rensselaer, Indiana.

Marist QB - Sophomore - will be thrown into the fire. Hearing the stud LB may also play RB too to assist the Junior who got in when McCollough was out. So right now Marist has a huge experienced OL - but very litle experience at QB and WRs (pretty much lost all their starters). Rice has some guys back on OL, but also bring back Valladay at RB, Houston/Kindle/Murphy as other WRs to complement Smalling. Marist brings back a good amount of Defensive starters as does Rice.
Rice has advantage on the speed factor. Marist on the size. Should be one that comes down to whoever has fewest turnovers and fewest penalties.

A big matchup in this game is going to be Marist DB Robert Topps who has a few d1 offers, going up against Ricky Smalling. Topps is a big cover corner, but we all know how good smalling is. I look forward to this match up

Last season if you doubled Smalling...well he would still be open most of the time, but BR had Julian Blain that was a well above average WR....he graduated so BR needs to find someone like him to take the pressure off the QB having radar lock.

I think there are a few teams that will have a say in this. one of them will be featured weekly on the Drive. Another in the Blue they will have to get by.

Can't argue that at all....I think there are about 5 teams that can take it home this year and in my humbled opinion Rice and Loyola are 2 of them in 8A.

Really? Rice will win 8A?

Meh, I think the top 5 @Cross Bones listed in another post is a more accurate list of those who can win 8A. I don't think there is 1 team that is above and beyond better than the others like Loyola last year. It's any mans game this year and I feel Rice is in that category.

Rice and Simeon...that's a tough non-con schedule for the RedHawks. I wonder if Marist found it easy or difficult to schedule such quality non-con competition.
Very very difficult, near impossible task! Thanks for your question Ramblin all the best...Coach Racki

BR and SIMEON to start the year followed by a tough ESCC schedule featuring Benet JCA Naz, and an up in coming Marian team. Marist has one of the tougher schedules this coming year. Could result in missing playoffs, but if they can survive this schedule I like there chances of making a run just like last year. Survive and Advance

I am not sure. Marist also turned a 2 year agreement with MC with MC going to Marist in both '16 and '17.

Hopefully, you don't mean Marian Catholic. Last year their Sophs and Varsity were a combined 0-14 in conference and were outscored 601-125. In addition, they did not even field a freshman team. . If you are referring to Marian in Woodstock, I would not call them up and coming. They have been a power for years.

I was told a lot of impact sophomores up on Varsity for Marian Catholic last year, and with that plus Sean Mele hired as head coach that they should be a completely different team that last couple years. I guess only time will tell. Still don't see them competing for conference but maybe give some people issues?

We shall see. But how much impact could they have made for a team that was 1-8?

With just one winning season out of ten as a head coach, Sean Mele wasn't able to get it done at Marist (24-32) or St. Laurence (10-26) under his watch. Draw your own conclusions with the fact that Pat Dunne went 9-3 in his first year at Marist after inheriting a RedHawk program that went 4-5 and 3-6 the two previous years under Sean Mele.
