Ive known its bad, but DAMN!! i am rewatching the GA game and our first three punts go for 34,33, and 37 yards. none were pooch kicks or anything. you mean to tell me that we cant find a guy to kick the damn ball a reasonable distance with some hangtime?

Its confusing, I thought this kid was going to be very good. Has he been hurt or any problems healthwise? Very strange.

His punts remind of the our Punter from last year, but I swear they are different players. Anyways low and 35 yards will not cut it

This aspect of our overall game is killing us with field position, along with dropped passes

He has a very low trajectory on his kicks when they leave his foot, its only a matter of time before one gets blocked.

I know absolutely nothing about the fundamentals of punting. That being said, I've noticed something watching him punt compared other punters, college and pro. Most of the punters I see drop the football at an angle when they punt. In other words, the nose of the football points down toward the ground. The football, on most of his drops, is much more flat, or parallel to the ground. Like I said, I don't know anything about punting, but could the way he drops the football be causing his short punts?

hasn't he been blocked this year?
There's been at least one that was partially blocked that resulted in a net punt of about 15 yard; can't remember which game it was.

With the exception of the one against Mizzou, the punt coverage has generally been pretty good. That one is on McKinniss as his poor punt enabled the returner to get a running start in the open field.

Given UK's history I can't understand why they are not "Punter U."
Over the years, the consistent offensive ineptitude would provide lots of opportunities for development and promotion of an All-American.
I guess it must be hard to project from high school to college at that position.
I know coaches hate to tie up scholarships with kickers but at UK, it might help more than one more WR.

It looks to me that they are trying to get him to break some bad habits, or patterns, and he is thinking too much as he is kicking instead of just pounding the ball! I hope that by next year he is booming those suckers!!

He is just not getting the job done, high school punters average more than he does, but you don't hear much about it. Our defense is getting better and it would really help if we could make teams start deep in their own territory, We can do better surely.

Kickers are kind of like golfers. If they can't putt to begin with all the tips and practice will never make them good putters. Same with picking up women in bars.

At least that has been my experience.

A good punter is worth 3 plus points a game, how many games have we lost by 3 points or less over the last 20 years.

My fb coaching experience has mostly been in special teams (kicking)
I cannot imagine he got a scholarship if he didn't show more leg strength in HS or camps
To break a habit (in any sport) it takes a lot of reps - like Briscoe in BB improving his jumper
we just didn't have the luxury of RS the boy or having another punter kick while he works out his kinks
That's why IMO he is struggling with consistency and will prob be much improved by next season

As a former punter, you want the ball to be completely flat when it hits your foot. Punters will often practice hundreds of ball drops every practice seeking to drop the ball so that it lands parallel to the ground. The punt will travel much further if you kick a spiral, which is only possible if the ball hits your foot completely flat. If you kick it at an angle, you will get an end-over-end kick (like a kick-off or place kick), and the ball won't go as far.

Of course when we punted from our 40-45 yard line I believe he put it 8 yards deep in the end zone.
Punting is a skill..
Kind of like trying to murder the golf ball..
experts can do it, but the harder I swing the worse off I am.
