I will give you the thinking of a former D-1 coach on Monday:

The Rutgers guards are really to big for Purdue guards to handle and will get backed into the post, especially by Mulcahy.

The key may be Omoruyi avoiding 2 early fouls.

Mackey is as tough a place as there is in the country.

Purdue had a generational team last season and this team is nowhere close to it.

Caleb needs to take his jumper more,as he is much improved offensively.

Still can't believe St Peters beat them last year.

Purdue is a better team this year. Better talent last year. Did not care to play defense last year. Very solid so far this year. Key players chose style over substance last season. This season the players seem to be on the same page.

Time will tell what happens this year but last year's team had issues that made the whole less than the sum of the parts. It's the opposite this year.

Yup exactly this.

32 minutes of 2022 Edey > 40 minutes of 2021 Trevion + Edey

They don't have Ivey to make explosive plays but they also don't need to waste possessions forcing an iso for him.

We need to use our length to force Purdue to run their offense a step or two beyond the three point line .

Little subtly to watch for that can get Purdue out of whack sone and keep them under 70

And a tempo for us to get a win

Jaden Ivey was the 5th player taken in the NBA draft. Sorry, as well as Purdue is playing, they
don't have anyone on the roster that comes close to his ability

You're correct but Ivey was completely lost or uninterested on defense most of the time. And all of their wings (plus Edey) are a year older and a year better.

Last year their turnover rate was 115th. This year it's 15th. I chalk that up almost directly to them cutting out the dumb stuff Ivey did.

We are playing extremely well as a team. I hope we fans can keep our composure if we get blown out in one of the next 5 games. Not saying it’s going to happen, but every team has that WTF game.

The stats show Purdue is worse than us on the season from 3 pt range, shooting 30.5%. I'd say packing it in on Edey makes more sense than hoping he doesn't go too off.

Purdue has been great at avoiding turnovers, too, but I say we challenge the young guards with full court pressure. Make them work to get in the half court sets, and make those guys work on D too. Don't overdrive the baseline into Edey, hoping to find an open man in midair.

We should have a chance as long as we aren't ice cold.

I’m super excited for this game.

It’s a huge moment in the season for us.

Winning in the road at the number 1 team would get tons of national attention for RU.

Winning this game would be very important for any of us dreaming of another double bye at the end of the season.

Getting this one would be a HUGE feather. A road feather . In our tournament resume hats. Which it sorely needs an impressive win right now to complement the IU win

Purdue is not winning this game hitting 2 point goals. If we hold them to 5-6 made threes we will be in great shape. It will be a war on the backboards. We have to stop the mindless turnovers. Do not expect 3 like we just did but less than 10 and eliminate the Cliff moving screens and Hyatt or Mag running someone over for a charge and that is 4 less right there. We use our elite defense and elite pressing to make them uncomfortable all day and get in the passing lanes and go. I might be wrong but I doubt their defense can stay with us and all of our offensive options. Paul and Caleb have to and likely will have elite stat stuffing games. Hopefully our freshman and Cam provide something and Mackey doesn’t do what it usually does to first time visitors.

So, you’re saying make those 10 things happen, then Rutgers has a chance…gotcha.

Purdue is #1 but they’re really on the verge. Nebraska should have beaten them. They looked sloppy against New Orleans. They are good but they aren’t impossible like going to Kansas or Kentucky or something. Treat this one with the same mindset like we did at OSU. Tough team on the road but if we play hard we can compete and win. It’s a conference game, forget the ranking

It’ll take RU’s best performance of the season to beat them. We lost a little bit of composure at times in the 3 losses not on the Livingston campus.

I know we all love to celebrate the home win last season but they won pretty handily in the rematch.

Easy 2 point buckets inside are killer goru.
Notre Dames two bigs killed us last year.
It also puts Purdue in position to defend much easier.
I’ll take my chances with turnovers in the paint and making life difficult for Edey….yup there will be wide open 3s

Rutgers chances of winning this game will end with Cliff and probably other Scarlet Knights getting in early foul trouble. You people aren't familiar with life on the road in our league ?

All the more reason to double and triple Edey.
Cliff alone might have 2 fouls in the first minute

any chance we start woolfolk and then bring in Cliff?Didn't Pike do that early on in Cliff's career to avoid getting quick early fouls?

He did it with Myles for several games as he tended to be foul prone with certain matchups.

Just got the feeling the refs slap two quick fouls on Cliff and then we have problems adjusting to him not playing
I hope Pike does something like play Cliff 2-3 minutes (and he doesn't get a foul) then sub Wolf for a few minutes.
Game conditions have to be just right to do that and Pike has to think Wolf is ready, but I'd love to see Cliff get that early break, hopefully helping avoid fouls.

I think the way Rutgers is built schematically matches up with Purdue fairly well - Pike's system is a good counterpoint to Painter's, so the games have mostly been close.

02/20/2022 - Away (loss by 12)
11/09/2021 - Home (win by 2)
11/29/2020 - Home (win by 5)
03/07/2020 - Away (win by 3 in OT)
01/15/2019 - Away (loss by 35... Omoruyi's first game out after injury vs. OSU)
03/02/2018 - Neutral (loss by 7)
02/03/2018 - Home (loss by 2)
02/14/2017 - Away (loss by 17)

FWIW, Purdue is definitely better than Kentucky this year!
