Question about John Schnatter / Papa Johns

Quick question about John Schnatter while waiting for the tournament to start. I see that he's in the process of giving over six million more dollars to the UL business college. He's obviously given UL millions upon millions of dollars for other things i.e. Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium etc. Also gives Pitino access to his private jet. He can give his money to whomever he chooses. My question is this: I know UK sells Papa Johns pizza / food at their sporting events and numerous other venues. Does anyone know if he donates any money to UK ? For all I know he may give more to UK than he gives to UL but I'm unaware of this. There's probably a good reason that UK backs Papa Johns by selling their product but it seems like there's other options if he gives the bulk of his money to UL. Not being a jerk here, just asking how this works. THANKS.

He should invest in Sullivan's culinary school. Maybe they could suggest ways to improve his crappy pizza.

I know Papa John's is an 'official sponsor' of UK athletics, and I'd imagine that is not cheap.

John is a good guy and puts money where it's needed including the NFL and UK. He was at Brooklyn the last time we played there, he is a fan of us too.

Glad to hear that. I was just curious but as you said I'm sure there's a possibility that he puts his money into places other than UL. But man he gives them a lot of $$$$$. THANKS.

lets just say there was a reason the UL people were massively p*ssed in 2012 when he was in UK's corner all season long.

I know that Cal has been in his commercials, but I do not believe that he has given anywhere near the amount of money to UK that he has UL. That is why my children were instructed years ago, to not bring his product into my house. Once he bought naming rights to their stadium, that was it.

There is a similar thread over on the UofL board. They are threatening to boycott any sponsors affiliated with WHAS. It is petty on both sides. PAPA Johns is based out of Louisville. It make perfect sense to buy the naming rights. hell I hate the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T has their naming rights. You want me to try to take away my wife's iphone? Not going to happen.

BTW the CEO of Maker Mark.....with all the blue Makers stuff.....well he is secretly a UofL fan and it was his plane they used when UofL hired Pitino. You think that is going to stop me from drinking that delicious bourbon????

Papa johns is all that is wrong with college sports. He is secretly destroying UK one slice at a time. At this rate in 2 years we will have two more championships. I wonder how many free pizzas Louisville athletes get? I'm sure it's 2x as much as the students. The only difference is that one box contains "pizza" and one contains something over than payment.

I like Peyton manning but watching him hang out and promote papa johns and the chains he owns is like watching hitler seeing a Steven Spielberg film and deeming it "Oscar worthy"
I almost want to just skip bengals season because it's a papa johns love fest. Now with Peyton showing his age papa has the new recruit in his commericals. A red headed kid enjoying his pizza while secretly its Pizza Hut. Please for the love of UK, doing something good for lent give up the papa for 40 days and 40 nights
(Obviously, those who maybe PC I'm only joking about certain parts. Where he invests his money and pizza chains is up to him. If UK then great, if not then next time you head to rupp bring in your empty pizza boxes and exchange them for tixs to the game. Who knows maybe, just maybe rupp will honor them)

He was born and raised in Louisville/Southern Indiana. He still lives there and the Papa John's headquarters is in Louisville. And you think he shouldn't support the University in that town? This most recent gift has nothing to do with sports. If you can't separate that from your disdain for a sports team...well, perhaps you should take a few classes at said school.

He's a business man, who, actually, no longer runs the company. He's the "face", but, no longer the man running the business. Sure, he still has plenty of pull, but, geez, people...not everything is about UK vs UofL. THEY ARE BOTH SCHOOLS...at least I hope so. I have a degree from both...does that make me some type of bad person?

I wouldn't go so far as to call a Wildcat brother "bad" but you're definitely off to a good start.
I'm the OP and if your (realism) comments were aimed at me then I'm with maverick. I just asked a simple question so no need to get sh*tty about it. If your comments weren't aimed at me then I apologize.

He has tickets right behind the UK bench. He doesn't go to all but he does go to a few. I have a client who has used his seats and it's crazy how close the seats are.

Dopy, are you referring to the guy that's behind the UK bench every home game with the blue Elton John shades? That guy would be great to know.

As you get you tend to get wiser, but I don't know if it will happen to some of you. Not allow your kids to bring Papa John's Pizza home, saying it's cardboard covered with tomato sauce (obviously you are wrong or they wouldn't sell as many as they do...I know my whole family likes it).

Objectivity has bypassed many of you.

The pizza really isn't that good. Perhaps taste comes with age. When I was in college I admit I loved it, and it's fine enough compared to the other chains, but I'd certainly never choose to order it at this point in my life. It would probably be better if he hadn't just stolen the recipe from the pizza place he worked at in Muncie.

No I wish I knew that guy, Johns seats if you are looking at the bench are to the right. But when the team stands up you cant see anything, I could live with it.

brianpoe, I gotta disagree with you about him being a UK fan. He is a business man and 34% of L-ville and 68% of the state is UK fans. His association with UK is a business matter. He is red at heart make no mistake. As far as UK goes they are going to take his money no matter who he privately roots for.

this is a dead on post.
Also for those complaining about the taste of Papa Johns , from someone who worked in the pizza industry for 15 years and worked for many different companies i can tell you there are much worse tasting pizzas and much better ones as well. I think to call it cardboard with velveda is kinda harsh though. I prefer mom and pop pizzarias ( and preferred working for them as well) but Papa Johns is much better IMO then say garbage like Dominos .

It's because of the water. Belongs in the tap, not in his dough. He uses that organic dough.

Historically I'd agree with you, but right now I'd easily give the nod to Dominos, especially their pan pizza.

Papa Johns is garbage pizza. But even garbage pizza is pretty good. His company gives UK $$ so that drunk idiot is ok in my book.

They also have the best breadsticks

Seriously five bucks is crazy, sadly the nearest one is like ten minutes from my house, Papa Johns is two minutes.

He opened an establishment in Gatlinburg that serves the best pizza on the planet. Some people drive all the way down there to indulge. That's really all you need to know about The Papa.

The city gave Papa some tax incentives to keep his corporation here. Since it's in Louisville he donates a lot and I don't think he is a fan other than it's a business decision and the chance came up to have naming rights on the new stadium. He does give to UK as do all the big national business men in this area because it pays more than that back to them to be affiliated.

I could be wrong but I think he donates a lot to IU as well, he started Papa Johns in southern Indiana.

Actually it's crazy that 2 of, if not the 2 biggest, chain restaurants were started in southern Indiana and are both corporated in Louisville now.

It seems to me that fans should be able to separate donations to athletic programs, like stadium naming rights fees, from donations to the university itself. The donation to the U of L business school that the OP references is good for the community as a whole. I'm not sure why any UK sports fan would have a problem with that.

I'd LOL at UL fans who boycotted electricity produced by coal because of the Craft Center and Wildcat Lodge.
