Question about next year’s team / recruits..

We have 6 recruits committed.. We have 2 seniors (in the 10 man rotation).. Only 2 players right now that are (pretty much) guaranteed to go pro (Tre & Vernon)..

So, we need 2 more players to go pro or transfer?

What happens if just 1 more leaves, or none?

Would we have a top 50 freshman or a senior AOC/Goldwire having basically no chance at any real playing time?

There’s space for all six of those scholarships and even one more. Assuming Carey & Jones are the only two to go pro that would leave six returning scholarship players and 13 is the max. I think one or two or possibly even three others may go early if they have a good run in the tourney and get a first round grade. But, let’s assume only two go early. The scholarship returning players would be:

Baker
Hurt
Goldwire
Stanley
Moore
O’Connell

Coming in are (ESPN rankings):
44. Coleman III
29. Williams
28. Brakefield
23. Steward
22. Roach
4. Jalen Johnson

First, it’s still possible any of Stanley, Hurt, or Moore could go. I think at least one will.

Second, the six coming in are not all top 10 recruits. One has to think that 2 or 3 or 5 of those are going to be 2, 3, 4 year players. Consider that Javin was the #44 recruit and has lasted 4 years. Bolden came in the same year ranked 16 and played 3 years - without much pt early.

So I expect that K will have to use his bench again as he has this year. It’s the only way he will keep players to develop. Obviously he won’t play 12 but it could be 10-11 deep. Or if the three freshmen aside from Carey all play great down the road then that leaves 9 scholarship players.

I don’t think there’s a lot to worry about at this point and there’s still a long way to go before we really know who will return. And injuries are always a legitimate potential issue.

Yea I see where it’s possible to have all of them, I just don’t see any of our current players or any of the incoming freshmen being ok with no playing time.. and we all know, if you’re not in the top 10 in the rotation you will get no playing time.. and even the top 8-9 when ACC play starts.. a chance any freshmen redshirt?

I doubt he will but i feel like Coleman would benefit a lot from a redshirt. Get a year and hopefully develop his offense because i don’t think he has much on that side of the ball. But as i said i doubt he will.

If we don’t get another big, then Coleman probably wont redshirt due to depth issues in the frontcourt. Even if we were to get another big or Hurt does come back, I still couldn’t see Coleman redshirting.

Why wouldn’t they have no shot at playing? To hell with the freshman. Give me the upperclassmen that know how to play Duke basketball.

Yeah i mean i can’t either but I’d say if one of the incoming recruits would it’d be him. I don’t think any of them want to redshirt tho.

Tre and Carey
Javin, White, Buchmiere and I believe Robinson

That’s six freed up right there. I believe Buckmiere and Robinson are on scholarship this year.

Out of the other three Frosh, my vote would be Stanley gone unless Moore just shows out the second half of the season. Hurt might go but it would simply be for his shooting ability but he’s rail thin.

I never worry about stuff like this. K and most of his staff has been around long enough to be able to understand this issue better than all of us. They will make sure they have the scholarships availble to sign their class and leave room open to land another person if the oppertunity presents its self.

Is hurt sold on leaving no matter what?
From everything I've gathered (which is basically twitter rumors), Hurt was almost a OAD lock over the summer, but it was projected that he could possibly lead Duke in scoring. Obviously things haven't worked out great for Hurt and Carey has been the man.

I think it's too early to tell for Hurt and Moore still. Tre and Vernon are definitely gone. Stanley I think is gone too, mainly because of his age. My guess is one of Hurt or Moore leaves and one comes back, who that guy is? No clue.

Asking hurt to come back would be like asking him to come back for his junior year. Turns 20 in april. Having to compete against jalen, baker, Coleman and brakefield at the forward position. Imo hes gone

The new mock draft came out today on NBADraft.net and Vernon was projected 5th and Tre was projected 43rd. Only Duke guys projected. Obviously a lot can change in the next 6 months.

Just food for thought.

2. Steward/??? Imo itll be 1 of wend/aoc/kuminga
3. Johnson/ baker
4. Brakefield/ Coleman
5. Williams/??? Imo 1 of bediako or hunter

i know a lot of people are going to disagree with me but i don’t think it’s such a sure thing Tre leaves this year. If we win it all then yeah he’s gone. But if not i think there’s a chance he stays. When announcing he was staying for another year he said something along the lines of “can’t leave without it” referring to a ring/championship. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to follow through with that but i could definitely see him staying. Imo i don’t think he’ll translate well to the NBA. Shooting is such an important part of the game for guards and he doesn’t have it at this point. I think it’s very possible he leaves after this year but i don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion.

If Tre does come back, I would love for Goldwire to redshirt. He wouldn't get much playing time and he would be a valuable piece to the team the year after.
