Zap, curious as to whether your father ever spoke of a guy or guys who were particularly tough for him[pitching wise].

Herb Score was the toughest he said he ever faced. He took a line drive in the toe, changed his delivery to compensate for the pain and hurt his arm.
When he saw Koufax in the 63 series after he went 27-5 during the year, he said I understand why he won 27, what I don’t understand is how he lost 5.
My dad crushed Bunning and Feller, you absolutely couldn’t throw a fastball by him.
Overall, no name junk ballers probably gave him the most trouble.

I have been told your dad had a wide hitting zone

Was it like Vlad where he could and would hit any pitch

zappaa,

The answer to this is probably going to be "no" but if it's alright, I'll ask it anyway.

Did your dad ever meet Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig in any capacity as a kid, teenager, or in his adult years?

Google: Babe Ruth/Yogi Berra
You’ll see the only meeting the two ever had in 1947...Babe died shortly after the photo was taken.
He never met Gehrig.

Could and would are the key words, but don’t throw it down the middle either.
From the 7th inning on he hit close to 400
Do you know how much many he would made in today's era? Perhaps 10 years and $400m!

Thanks for the answer. It had occurred to me later he might have crossed paths at Babe Ruth's farewell day at original Yankee Stadium.

Since we’re on the topic of baseball and history. Non yogi question zap. I moved to Pittsburgh last year and bought a house owned by Don Robinson. Just wondering if you knew him well when you played here or ever visited the house. The basement of the house has a full baseball diamond in the carpet so it would be pretty memorable. My son loves it.

New him very well and visited his home several times.
Don’t remember the carpet though.

Zap, question regarding the 79 Pirates, who was more important to the team Stargell or Parker in terms of in the field performance?

I had the pleasure of knowing Herb Score. He bristled when people said that he changed his motion out of fear, after he was clocked in the face by Gil McDougal's line drive. He said he hurt his arm during the season and was out for the rest of it. When he came back, he tried compensating for it and got into some bad habits.

He was a great guy. When he came in to Yankee Stadium when he was the Indians announcer, he got us tickets behind home plate. When I was sent on business to Cleveland, I noticed that they were playing that evening and called Herb to see if he had any tickets (They played in the huge but mostly empty Municipal Stadium). He said he had plenty of tickets for me.

I asked him when does the game start? He replied, "When can you get here?"

While nowhere near a great Yogi-ism, it was pretty funny.

Zap, I was going to speculate on a couple when I asked the question, but I didn't want to. So help me God, Herb Score was the first. He was really something until he got hit. Though Koufax came a little later, I thought Score had been just like him. Both of them had great fastballs & a hard hook that just fell off the table. As you know that pitch is almost impossible to hit. Didn't think of your Dad facing Koufax in the 60's. Koufax was the best I ever saw. Thanks so much for answering that question. Your Dad had Eddie Lopat, a great junkie, on those great Yankee teams.

Boy could your Dad hit. He'd get on top of that high fastball & drive it & he'd golf 'em out as well. Forget about down the middle. And he didn't strike out. Great clutch hitter. Thanks so much for responding.
