How long does Clayton White stay on board this sinking ship? Obviously he won't leave before the end of this season, but I would expect that with all the openings in CFB this year, he'll be shopping his resume around.

White loves it here. He won't leave for a lateral move unless the money is just so much more. He only leaves for a G5 head job.

He's certainly not ready for a P4 HC job. I could see a higher profile program kicking his tires for DC, though. I think we should move now to give him a raise and extension.

I like him. They had some missed assignments and tackles against Ole Miss, but overall he has produced defenses that were good enough to win if we had an offense.

If for some reason Beamer was fired after the Clemson game I would not mind if he were given a shot as HC next year. Put him on a short leash and load his contract with incentives, but we could do a lot worse and he might be just who we need.

Is that you Ray?

ha! Our D has been our saving grace this season (as hard as that is to say in a 4-7/3-8 campaign). They've kept us in games that we had no business being in b/c of how atrocious the offense was. If we had a mediocre offense, we would have beaten LSU, Bama and Ole Miss, at least, and our season would be looking very, very different. Given all the upheaval and this season and coaches who will be looking to build their staffs, I think you have to acknowledge the job White has done and give him a raise.

If he were to leave, then absolutely stick a fork in Beamer. No way he can succeed next year with a new DC and OC.

From his long term career perspective.

He can come back here and work on a good defense again, only to lose his job as the staff gets fired.

Or take his reputation and shoot for a G5 job, or a DC at a better school.

If it were me, I would have to seriously consider looking at the DC position at a top P4 school.

Shane has a lot of moving pieces here. I think he needs to give White a raise and give him some assurances that he's going to make a serious OC hire this time around to help the D out. Likewise, I think keeping White on board makes it somewhat easier to attract a solid OC since he knows he'll be working in a system with a solid D already in place.

White may be looking at the landscape and thinking "I can stay a DC at an SEC school and not put the ridiculous stress of being a HC in this environment".

I like White & want him to stay here as DC (with maybe a guest DC anytime we play Drinkwitz), but no coach on a 1-7 conference team should get a raise. Last time we had a conference record that bad was the dreaded Chicken Butt on the helmet season.

That kind of thinking is what got Teasley a massive raise this past offseason. The team finished well, so everyone got rewarded, even though he was objectively awful. Literally one of the worst OL coaches in CFB, but he got a raise b/c folks only looked at the final record. As absurd as that was, it would be equally absurd to just look at the final record this year and say nobody deserves a raise.

Our D has FAR outplayed our 3-6 record. If we had a mediocre offense, we'd likely be at least 7-2 right now. In spite of how awful the offense has been, often putting the D in bad positions and giving them little rest, we are 47th nationally in scoring defense at 23.6 ppg. That is, frankly, remarkable given how atrocious the offense has been.

We can't on the one hand acknowledge that White has performed so well that other programs might try to poach him from us but on the other hand argue that he doesn't deserve a raise b/c the offense sucked. We are terrible this year only because of the OL and offense overall. White has nothing to do with it.

Im on the "give him a raise" side. He and his staff have earned it.

And I think we need to seriously wonder if he is jumping ship.

Yes, he has coached his butt of this season. It would be foolish to say he doesn't deserve a raise b/c the offense was historically awful. The last time we had an offense this bad, Clayton White was a young man in his early 20s. He hadn't even started coaching yet.

White may be our best DC ever, or at least equal. He will not be easy to replace if we lose him.
If our offenses played as good as his defenses, we might have some really good teams.

White will be leaving after this season. Did we not bring on board an experienced DC to be an analyst during the pre-season? Remember, Shula was an offensive analyst for a year before he was promoted. Past actions are usually the way to read future actions to come.

Let me just add that my view is that White informed Beamer of his intent to move on after last season. So Beamer brought in an experienced DC to be an analyst with the intention of making him DC once White moves on. Beamer brought in Shula with the expectation that Loggains would move on. History rhymes.

Former Georgia Tech Head Football Coach Geoff Collins was brought in this past summer as Senior Defensive Analyst. Coincidence? I believe coincidences are rare. He has been a DC at Mississippi State, Florida and North Carolina. Like I said, I don't believe in coincidences. I suggest we brace ourselves for the best football coach on staff leaving.

So you're saying Beamer's intention prior to the start of the 2024 season was to fire Loggains at season's end?

I'm not a mind reader. That said, the offense in 2023,,,,let's just say fans were not enthralled with it. That season was considered a disappointment.

White has the credentials to get a Head Coaching job. He and Lembo are considered the best hires by Beamer. Lembo is a Head Coach now. I suspect that White is on that path. And certainly the defense' performance this season (47th out of 134 teams), severely handicapped by an atrocious offense, makes him a prime prospect for a Head Coaching job, which he has indicated he wants.
