POB not ready compared to one or more of our backups - Redshirt
POB ready to play, but TA performs better - backup to TA
POB ready to play, performs better or equal to TA - start POB

Haha. But there is a 4th and 5th likely scenario that you see a ton in college football.

POB isn't ready to play but the coaches throw him to the wolves because the team is losing & all the media & fans are calling for the phenomenal freshman QB that has never played a down of college football.

POB losses the job to another QB. Thinks he was the better than the QB that won the job and he transfers to San Jose State and is never herd of again.
