Has anyone seen a situation like this before? Not sure if it’s been discussed here already but apparently Wake Forest and UNC, both ACC members, scheduled this game as a non-conf game bc they wanted to play each other but are in different divisions. Despite Wake losing 55-58 they remain 5-0 in ACC play.

Can’t recall ever seeing that before. And I once saw Elvis on a flight from Lubbock.

Obviously the rivalry is the factor here. Good for those 2 for scheduling it.

I remember in the 1998-99 UTEP basketball season, they played an early-season home-and-home with TCU, who was also in the WAC, but the games were not considered conference games. This was in the 16-member super-WAC right before the Mountain West broke off, and the teams were in different divisions and weren't scheduled to play each other during the conference season.

So yes, I've seen it once before, in basketball. I can't think of any other time I've seen it.

In practice, it's similar to the treatment of conference championship games which are not included in conference records.

They agreed to a home and home (WF/UNC) in 2015 for the years 2019 and 2021 since the ACC rotation meant they wouldn't see each other for near a decade.

Yeah pandemic year schedule scrambled it because ND got added to the conference and divisions were scrapped so they did a one off schedule for everyone.

Originally they weren't scheduled to meet for a decade other than the 2 nonconference games.

Price of having 8 game schedules in a 14 team setup.

Happens a lot in baseball for midweek games and teams like Ole Miss and Mississippi State play an extra "classic" against each other every year.

without a lot of DYOR, I think the fact that it is a non-con game really limits Clemson's ability to slither into the CCG. NC State has a loss but tie breaker v Clem. Wake has no conf losses. So Wake could, say, lose to Clem but not NSCU and keep the division. Also NCSU can lose to Wake but hold tie breaker v Clem.

Of course, there are other games Wake and NCSU could lose. I think Clemson could have an NU type season, lean on defense, win out and win a December bowl and end up ranked. But - if one of the others stumbles, Clemson could still win the division, as unlikely as that seems.
