Considering that it is a chain, Portillos is right up there in both categories

Beefs = Portillo's but I'm biased because it was my 1st job working at store #1.

I do like all of their food but thought the quality was much better before Mr. Portillo sold the chain.

I'm going to give a shout out to the Wheaton College concession stand hot dogs. They were really great when I attended a HS game there and the hot chocolate was tremendous!

Deli - Frankies in Lombard/Yorktown. Be sure to catch "Chicago's Best" on WGN at 10PM on Saturday the first week of March because all the Montini coaches will be on the show tasting Frankies Meatball Sandwiches!!!

Word of warning on Portillo's ever since they were sold drop in quality. I got severe food poisoning as well from hot dogs there a month ago. Didn't eat for 3 days. I'll never go there ever again

This is so subjective, and regional, but I lean towards these beefs being top notch - Tony's on Pulaski, Johnnies on North, Al's on Taylor Street, Zig's (RIP) and Chicky's.

Zig's! Loved that place. Duke's is still in operation a couple of miles down the road.

Hot Dogs - Jim's Original, for those late night rides home from the city, Genes + Judes
Beef - Johnny's

( hitting both Johnny's and Genes + Judes less often now that Maywood no longer has live racing)

I agree 100% Dean. Portillo's is waaaaay overrated.

I never understood the Hot Dougs phenomena when it came to his hot dogs...now all the other items were thoroughly unique and he was/is a character. but the regular hot dog was nothing special. Went there a few times and only had the hot dog the first time, nothing special.

This.

The duck fat fries were pretty damn good though. Always went with Italian sausage or brat there.

I've had hot dogs from places all across the country, and no city's hot dogs beat Chicago.

I've had hot dogs from places all over Chicago, and nobody ... nobody ... beats the taste, texture, aroma and appeal of a Gately Dog.

I am not a big fan of the red hots taste and that thick skin. too me that is not a hot dog. that's a gag reflex waiting to happen. I like a good all beef boiled (Oscar meyerish) hahaha dog.
basically a small bologna sammich(hot dog).

when my kids were playing football, bb, bball in grammar school, me and buddy of mine used to do just this. have a taste test for each school visited. gotta say st syms(62nd and austinish), they always hadda nice spread. boiled dogs, mustard, relish, sport peppers, season salt, steamed buns. nice.
actually tested allot like jr's(juniors)...hmmm.

but, I gotta tellya the best dogs/beef I tasted were at olor boxing show last sat nite. boiled all beef dogs w/jalpenos and peppajack cheese bits inside. ooohman that's good. beef sammich was juicy, spread a lil mozzarella on the top, some hot peppers or sweet, and the buns slightly toasted but soggy from the juice.
damn good stuff..
was great fun nite for the kids boxing, we put on a boxing show for
k - 6graders. the little ones look like little rockem sockem robots.
