Disregard the Apples I can't see myself needing to spend that much.

I am more interested in what would be the best between the Motorola's, Samsung, etc.

I use a phone as a phone. I need it for calls, texting, email, scheduling and music. I don't use a phone as a PC or tablet. That said, I've had Droid Maxx, Turbo, etc... liked them all and they get recycled to our kids who also seem to like them. They seem to last a long time, anyway. Would have a new model now if not for the smoking deal on a Galaxy S7, which is really, really nice and WAY more phone than I'll ever need.

Just got the Samsung Galaxy Edge 7. Love it. The otterbox case that goes with this phone is a lot let bulky, so the phone doesn't take up your whole pocket but is still safe. Battery lasts almost all day long. I had a phone with solid battery life before it, and this one blows it away. Water resistant, also. Takes great pictures and video. Haven't messed around with the VR mask, yet.

My 5s is still going strong and I have no urge to upgrade unless Apple comes through with that rumored radical redesign for a "Pro" model on the IPhone 8 iteration.
I'm on a 6 Plus
And yet people want to tell OP how great their I phone is. Pay attention people!
This guy knows dick about smartphones - little enough that he made an open call for suggestions with the caveat that iPhones are too expensive.

He might want an iPhone, but doesn't think he can afford it. Some of us know this is not true. Apple carries a brand new "cheap" iPhone in its lineup, the SE. This is clearly the correct choice.

Tried a Motorola Droid for about a week which had a couple of cool features...just shake it and the flashlight comes on / or twist it and the camera comes on which is easier than the Iphone

The dealbreaker: my daughter shot down the emojis it sent out...Lol!....so back to the Iphone....6 for the 4

Pixel is probably the best phone right now. Updates get to it sooner, not as much bloatware on the phone, most recent specs.

Samsung Galaxy 7 is probably the next best. Still a solid phone, but don't waste money on the edge screen.. Hard to protect, and it's more or less useless.

I bought a Galaxy 3 about 4 years ago, use it all the time for music, texting, calling, emailing, calendar, etc. Interfaces great with my office PC, and never had a problem with it, and would not have an I Phone if you gave one to me. When my phone dies, will buy another Samsung product

The VR for Samsung is pretty cool for a few weekends, and it's fun to show people. But there isn't much content for it, and not having any real control (aside from that clunky D-pad) limits what you can do with it.

The HTC Vive however... Wow..

Went with the S7 because it was buy one get one free so the wife and i both got a new one. I also got the VR headset and a 256 GB Micro SD card for free with the 2 phones. It is a good phone, but I like the interface of the HTC more and the features on the LG.

I want a phone that has the knock to turn on and with buttons on the back like the LG. I also want the dual front facing speakers like the HTC used to have. I also like the features of the Motorola where you can add different things to the back of it. If only they could make a phone that had all of that.

Not sure exactly what my phone is, some sort of iPhone though.

Let me check. General>>About>>Model>>MG632LL/A>>GOOGLE MG632LL/A>>>iPhone 6.

I have an iPhone 6. I can send and receive phone calls. I can also text and listen to Dan Carlin on it. It also has a camera!

Moto G4 is really good.
I bought both my kids the Moto G4 (just the G4 - not the play or the plus).

for less than $200 you get a 600 series Snapdragon chip which support 1080p (older phones have the 400 series, higher quality phones have the 800 which support 4K), 32mb ram and marshmallow 6.0 which allows you to expand the core memory with an SD card , (many phones will come with a marshmallow 6.0 variant), 13mp camera on the back, 5mp on the front and a 5.5" screen. Comes with turbo charger and gorilla glass. Its also easily upgradeable to the next OS.

Non replaceable battery, no fingerprint scanner and no NFC (IIRC).

They love it - long battery life, works with the big 4 providers without issue and lets them do anything they want app wise.

Of all the unlocked phones on the market, I thought this was by far the best value given it works with any provider.

Amazon sells a cheaper version if you can tolerate adds appearing on your display when you aren't using the phone.

a good place to compare phones is gsmarena.com

with marshmallow 6.0 or newer, it really changes the phone market quite a bit, IMO

I have a Samsung 4.0 - and for what I need its a great phone - replaceable battery, SD card slot, good camera, reliable- the only issue is its 8gb and and constantly out of space. If I could easily put Marshmallow 6.0 on it without bricking it, the phone would have several more years of life in it for me.

AT&T has no interest in doing that and for now the effort to upgrade it on your own is a multi-step process that isn't fully fleshed out, IMO.

I endied up going with this Motorola for 150.00

I won't be making a lot of calls , one reason I chose it was the 12 megapixel camera. I have not explored it a lot yet. Seems plenty powerful though.

For those who know how is that memory and space? Holding charge well, but have not used it much. Now I need to find a protective case for it, looks like I'll have to order one online.

shake it like a tomahawk and it turns on the flash to act as a flashlight, twist your wrist twice holding it and it turns on the camera

My son says the battery lasts longer than his LG G3 which was supposed to have a long battery life. The camera isn't as good as his G3 or my daughters HTC One - but since both of them are now bricks, it doesn't matter.

I think you should be happy with it. Especially for $150 - and a phone that lets your switch providers based on whatever deal you can get.

The display isn't as good as most top of the line phones now and it appears to not shoot 4K video. That might not be a big deal to you. The internal memory is lower than I would like. It is okay at 16GB, but I prefer 32GB minimum. I think Android uses up about a quarter of that 16GB. Plus apps add up quickly. That doesn't count music, pictures, or videos.

You will want a Micro SD card to store all of those on. I have a tablet with 16GB and I am always running out of room just because of apps without any music, pictures, or videos on it. I believe that phone also only comes with 2GB of RAM which is also ok but not great. It seems like a decent budget phone.
Here is a comparison just to show the difference between that phone and a flagship type phone.

Display
Galaxy S7 5.1" quad HD display
Motorola G4 5.5" HD display

Memory
S7 4GB RAM
G4 2GB RAM

Storage
S7 32GB
G4 16GB

Camera
S7 12MP 4K video
G4 13MP 1080P video

Plenty of other things you can compare, but I will leave it at that.

anyone with Marshallow 6 or newer as an android OS should read this

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/135716-how-to-use-adoptable-storage-on-android-6-0-marshmallow

note: Both LG and Samsung have confirmed that the Galaxy S7 models and the LG G5 won't support the feature. Samsung went as far to say that this was because it thinks people will want to use microSD to move files back and forth between devices, which adoptable storage doesn't allow. The cynic in us suggests that it's actually because companies won't be able to sell you higher capacity devices at higher prices if they do support the feature.

For anyone who may still be looking for a phone, Best Buy is running an incredible deal on an LG G5. They are basically clearing stock for the G6. It's available for Sprint, ATT and Verizon for $5 a month on their installment plan, however you can pay it off for $120 unlike the other phones that you get on some kind of bill credit. To make the deal even better it also comes with an accessory pack that includes an extra battery, battery charger and USB-C cable. You will not find another deal anywhere close to this on a phone with these specs. So if you are in the market I would suggest checking it out.
