COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball starting guard Raven Johnson announced that she will return next season.
She officially revealed the news on Tuesday via social media, the last day she had to reveal if she would declare for the WNBA draft or not.
She announced it shortly after Florida State transfer Ta'niya Latson, the nation's leading scorer announced she will play for coach Dawn Staley at South Carolina. The two played high school basketball and AAU together and after Latson entered the portal March 27, Johnson openly said she was trying to get her to consider South Carolina.
On Sunday, after the 82-59 loss to UConn in the national championship, Johnson said she had made a decision but couldn't announce it yet.
Johnson redshirted after sustaining a season-ending knee injury in November 2021, just weeks into her freshman season which put her in position to leave and declare for the draft after this season if she wanted to.
She started the last two years for Staley and this season, was named to the SEC All-Defensive team. She's averaged 4.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-high 2.8 assists per game this season. She has two national championships and three SEC titles in addition to being named SEC regular season champions all four years at South Carolina.
