Forcing a player to donate to charity the equivalent amount of a booster’s gift? Good luck with that.

Yeah, the kid's going to make $100 Million in coming years, no way he can afford to donate $11,500 to charity.

The horror!

That's not the point.
The point is, it is silly that the kid has to attend college for a year before going to the NBA. The sooner the NBA and the Players Association eliminate this collective bargaining agreement forcing this to happen the better. The NCAA is wasting their time on this issue.

They should do it like baseball. You can come out after high school. You can go to as JuCo for a year, or, if you want to play NCAA ball, you commit to staying for three years. That gives the players more options, the teams more stability, and the fans a greater chance to get to know the players on each team.
I'd also be in favor of letting the players decide what their doing even after they've been drafted. I know that's probably a non-starter, but again, it works for baseball, and it gives high school kids a bit more freedom and leverage.

I could be be wrong but I don't believe they HAVE to go to college for a year. They can play overseas for that year.

You are right. The can do whatever they want they just can't go to the NBA ( or the G league?). Tough row to hoe for an 18 or 19 year old kid to play in Croatia for a year though......

And they can play in the G-League. The G-League now offers a "Select Contract" of $125,000 for that season for elite high school grads who would rather earn a paycheck than the "privilege" of one year at a university they never intend to graduate from.

It's still kind of stupid that they have to wait a year, though. I agree with Fitzphile on this one; get rid of that stupid rule.

Wonder why kids even bother with college when they can do the G-League then......particularly one expected to be a #1 choice like this guy.

The G League has a lot of post-college guys on its roster. Hell, the Windy City Bulls employ Cristiano Felicio! What a waste. They also have Max Strus.

Some players are worried they’ll be exposed as an overrated prospect if they go the G-League route. For some reason, they feel the college route is safer to maintaining their high draftpick status.

It’s the NBA players union that clings to the rule. The veterans don’t like losing their roster spots to overhyped high schoolers. Blame the NBA players union on this one.
