Win a conference or division championship in college? 0-16 on that one currently

Win 11 or more games? 0-16 on that one also

I hope he continues to set the bar so well, Read underperformed at OSU and should have never been brought along, should have been let go last year.

I guess it's a positive that he has fixed the mistake, but I wouldn't crown him for doing something that was glaringly obvious
The guy has only been here two years. Pretty dumb to give credit or blame for what he did at another program.

It was quite obvious that our weakest link was in ST. Riley is da man today! Day by day...

Admittedly, I am surprised that Riley fired one of his coaches. He should have been fired, though, based on ST performance. Hopefully, we find a great replacement and best of luck to Mr. Read. GBR.

We haven't had a HC that was willing to fire assistants since Solich - and he was basically forced to do it.

This is a welcome change.

Okay, so Riley has a coordinator position open that pays $400k+

I am not saying someone is wrong, but would you seriously fill the position by bumping someone up from GA to coordinator?

Wouldn't a GA's next position be an assistant coach?

One would think that you could find an experienced coach for that kind of dough.

I would hope that Riley would go through a similar process to that of hiring Parrella for the DL position.

Firing a long time friend takes some serious thought and it would be a kick in the nuts to Read if Riley just filled it with someone without any experience. JMHO

The funny thing is we still have some today who are saying he had to do it, it was too obvious. Yesterday, however, many of those same people were certain he wouldn't make this decision. Where are those posters?

Cavs should be next. Need an online coach that preaches and practices physical line play. Will result in much tougher DL as well. Recruiting will only do so much, physical practices are the way to play physical
I know technology dictates more and more online teaching and coaching and stuff, but for the Oline, I think I still want someone physically present teaching these young men...;)

Bummer for Read, but for that kind of ST performance, we didn't need a coach solely devoted to the job. The question is what to do with the resources devoted to that psn. Does Riley feel strongly enough about Tavita's skill set that he retains him as an assistant? Can one of the other more senior assistant's take on the ST duties?

When Cav is dealing with a room that consists mostly of his recruits and isn't getting it done, then show him the door. This year, he was dependent on three present/former walkons in Utter, Hahn and Conrad. That's essentially 50% of the lineman that received meaningful snaps. Very little depth behind the guys save RS freshman. The guys who did play played injured for multiple games during the season. Seeing how Olinemen develop as players, I don't see how that can be laid at Cav's feet.

The point is people, apparently you are one, said he won't make changes on the staff because they are his buddy hires.

Bingo. This NU program has gone through numerous situations like this through the years and almost always we are disappointed that the head coach doesn't step up and clean house or fire a friend, which is hard if you have ever had to do it. This move is a small move but an important one for the repercussions that it has staff-wide. It is not words, but an action that shows everyone that if they aren't getting it done that they will be shown the door. It dispels the worry fans had that Riley won't make the hard choices and that he just was taking care of his friends.

We can debate the merits of everyone on the staff until we are blue in the face but these are the guys that Riley wants to surround himself with and he has his reasons and the support of his boss to do so. Anyone who has ever run an organization has had a hire or two that from the outside looked stupid or just didn't seem like a good fit but it worked out fine for all parties.

I'm assuming some people have an issue with Cav's approach to coaching. That's something I can't comment on, as I am a number of states away. But the guy deserves a chance to succeed or fail with a room that is stocked with properly experienced players. Not:
Gates - third year guy who might be one step from being a special player and who spent a good chunk of the season with a bad ankle.
Foster - another third year guy who is apparently quite talented, blew out a knee in pre-season and then worked his *** off to get back.
Hahn - fifth year walkon who we were lucky to have on hand or Boe Wilson would have maybe been playing as a true frosh.
Utter - fifth year former walkon
Farmer - third year guy who played most of the year with a bum ankle
Knevel - fourth year guy who played most of the year with a bum ankle
Conrad - third year walkon

We need 3-4 guys whose talent/athleticism level is at par with Gates, Foster and Farmer. Will a guy like Decker be ready in ten months? Does a guy like Conrad continue to develop?

Man, I was still on the fence about Riley until now...and I have definitely been a sarcastic @sshole the last couple days around here, but holy cow this is huge in every which way. Special teams is gonna improve, recruiting is gonna improve, and don't think other assistants and players don't see a little more urgency now.

It does beg the questions though...what the hell happened to Bruce Read as a coach? Was he ever a good coach? Did he just get complacent/lazy? Has the game passed him by with all the Xs-and-Os that are actually involved in ST now(specifically punt return)? I mean seriously, the guy used to be an NFL ST coach. If you've seen a real weekly NFL scouting report for special teams, you'd know how detail-oriented one of those guys has to be.

Didn't think Riley had it in him to fire one of his cronies. Nebraska football just got better.

Brian Polian and Nevada just parted ways. Polian was the Special Teams coach at Norte Dame under Weiss and his dad was the former GM of the Colts.
