Dude didn't have to pick Oklahoma the perfect dystopian ********, though.

"We lived in the Portland Avenue Stacks, a sprawling hive of discolored tin shoeboxes rusting on the shores of I-40, just west of Oklahoma City’s decaying skyscraper core."

An 80's pop-culture based scavenger hunt/quest in a virtual world is a great story idea and that part of the book was a page turner that I couldn't put down.

If the movie keeps it's focus on that and doesn't dwell on various side bars it should be a lot of fun.

However, a Spielberg interview I watched has me concerned that I might be disappointed.

Loved the book, not sure I'll like the movie but I'll definitely go see it. Something about the previews just leads me to believe I'll be disappointed. Also, I heard OKC got edited out of the movie.

Totally agree. One of my all time favorite books. Not sure the movie wii do it justice.

No. Tell me more.

He's out of left field, kind of like Ernest Cline. Try Bad Monkeys, and if you don't like that one you probably won't like his stuff. He only wrote one bad book imo, Sewer Gas and Electric, or something like that. I can't figure out why he's not a bigger success. I'd say 3 -4 of his books are on par or better than Ready Player One. His last one was kind of mediocre, though.

Ah

He wrote Set this house in order, right?

Really liked it. Need to try his other stuff.

In the movie the character is from the Midwest, not OKC. Not sure why Spielberg changed it.

I thought the book was horrible and predictable.. Nostalgia porn at its worse.

Well, I loved it.

Another thing I love about it is that I read it at age 48. I then gave the book to my daughter, who read it at age 15 and loved it. She gave it to my son, who read it at age 11 and loved it.

It is one of the few novels that I have really enjoyed, felt comfortable sharing with my kids, and that they were also captivated by.

My daughter and I read the Harry Potter series together, and I would put it in that category. But, they are few and far between.

Just finished the book. That was solid. A few predictable things in the end. But really solid.

You are right, I hope they focus less on the action scenes - even though they are pretty bad ***. But the game is going to be hard to show properly with out a ton of context.

Movie will be disappointing. They were unable to get licensing rights to much of the stuff mentioned in the book so they had to change a bunch of the gameplay references.

He wasn’t born in OKC, but that is where he is living to start the book. Speilberg did not film in OKC and possibly removes OKC entirely in the movie.

That’s what I have expected since I found out they were making it.

Wife and I just saw the movie. Watched it in the IMAX. I read the books; she didn't.
We both really found the movie very fun.

There was enough similar about the movie to the book to keep it familiar. But, there was enough different to keep the story line engaging.

There's so much in it that I'll need to watch it a few more times and even do some frame by frame inspection. There's just so much going on in every scene.

My son and about 1/2 dozen of the members of his Track Team watched it last night, after they finished their meet at Choctaw. He really liked it, I'll probably wait till its out on HBO, Netflix or similar.
