13 teams in the SMC for non football? That doesn't leave any room for scheduling non-conference games.

You've talked about your current conference being good. It's the same conference, why all of a sudden does it blow chunks?
Because I don't want to play in a STUPID split conference. Let KM go to Charlotte and play big boy football. Ashbrook too Forestview SUCKS out the wazoo. Huss......... whatever. North Gaston should just give up.

I liked the conference with Hickory, East Lincoln, North Lincoln South Point that wasn't split. It was better and more fun. And it made sense.

That's why.

With three classes we could subdivide for all playoffs (wherever possible, lacrosse might not work, for instance) and crown six state champions. That would make creating conferences much easier and produce fairer playoff opportunities. But the association never even considered it, as near as I can tell.

For Vance County, I'm glad we are paired with Franklinton who is less than 30 minutes away. I'm not, however, all that excited about playing Durham Schools. I'm sure they are great schools but Durham is at least 40 minutes from Henderson and this conference has no gate. Give me a conference with gate. If Vance County and Franklinton were paired up with J.F. Webb and South Granville, who are 5A, that would be some really good gate and exciting games. How the first draft went:

Vance County (6A)
Franklinton (6A)
Northern Durham (6A)
Southern Durham (7A)
Hillside (7A)
Riverside (7A)

dis gon' help smooth out them unfair gaps in gettin' folks on teams and cash flow that be favorin' them big schools. If someone can whip up a setup where every squad think they got a real chance at claimin' the title, it’ll pump up the vibes and get more people in the game.

Also does anybody know when the next draft comes out?
They will accept feedback from schools for a period of time, then release an updated draft. Seems that usually after the updated (2nd) draft, there is a time to hear appeals from schools (regional meetings across the state). Once the appeals are heard, and final adjustments are made, it goes to the NCHSAA Board of Directors for final approval.

I can't understand why NC doesn't realign every two years. All the states around us are on a 2 year cycle.

There will be a couple of appeals periods and new drafts then the conferences are supposed to be finalized in March.

They proposed 6 classes a few years ago, but it didn't pass the schools vote. IMO, if they had proposed 6 again this time, it would have passed.

With the rate of growth, especially in the metro areas, I think every two years is wise. It would also help appease some of the schools who might end up in an unfavorable travel conference. Waiting four years for a change is pretty miserable.

Agree to a point. I think KM and Ashbrook should either play in Charlotte .......
OR be in a 321 corridor conference.

If the point of conferences is to have like numbers represented.... geographically speaking this would make a lot of sense and keep teams out of CHLT. Also - conf's with ADM numbers within 100-125 could be:

KM, Crest, Ashbrook, HH, Hickory, Forestview and St. Stephens.
Crest's location is an issue for anybody east of them (going through Shelby mainly).

SP, NG, St. Cramer, East Gaston, N. lincoln and E. lincoln AND maybe Fred T. Foard.
I don't know why it is constantly swept under the rug that SP and EG have a 70 kid difference. SP has no more room to grow and EG could literally double in size. If that's not taken into consideration....well....draw your own conclusions about the people making these decisions.

burns, west lincoln, lincolnton, lincoln charter, RS Central and shelby could then be grouped together.

then Cherryville, east rutherford, Highand Tech, Bessemer City, Thomas Jefferson, chase

then Patton, Draughn, West Caldwell , Hibriten, East Burke, Polk County.
Sorry- but mountain teams and schools with less than 500 people are less plentiful and have harder options to fulfill.

I don't really care where Ashbrook and KM play. I'm not being my usual butthole self either. I just said Charlotte because I know they have bigger schools. My point was it's real easy to be a number one conference seed in 6A ball when there are just 2 of you.

The rest of us are banging it out.. Plus the conference with EL and Hickory is simply just better all around for us and South Point. IMO.

I don't really understand what you mean by issues with teams East of us going through Shelby, I guess I'm dense.

Might as well have Foard go into the conference with the Burke and Caldwell schools and switch Polk into the conference with Cherryville, ER, etc. That makes a "U.S. 74" conference (sorta) and Polk won't have to drive across either Rutherford or McDowell county to get to their nearest opponent.

What happens when a team is the only representative from a division in a split conference goes winless? In addition, they are conference champ every year for seeding purposes?

In 1A almost every team is going to make the football playoffs, so long as the association keeps a separate 1A class for football and doesn't combine it with 2A. If you still needed x number of teams to finish the seeding process with only winless teams remaining, you could just use the RPI for that.
Right now, a team from a lower classification in a split conference has to meet certain criteria to be seeded among the "conference champions" anyway.

That’s a great question my friend. I don’t know. None of this makes sense. 6 divisions would be perfect. Period.

But what if there is only (1) team representing the division in a split conference?

But what if there is only (1) team representing the division in a split conference?
Let's say Thomas Jefferson is the only 1A team in a split conference. With no wins they might still have an RPI (I have the 1A east basketball up right now on another screen and there are several teams with no wins who have different RPIs). In that case they might get the last seed in the playoffs if the association still needed teams to fill out a bracket. But if they won at least half their games (one of the criteria now) or finished in the "top half of the conference" (another of the current criteria), they would be seeded among the conference champions based on their RPI.
This works better with a sole team from a lower classification in a conference with teams from higher classifications than vice versa. McDowell will be the only 7A school in our conference and hypothetically has an advantage. There probably isn't a fair way to seed them against other 7A schools for playoff purposes.

This happened some years ago when S. Caldwell won their split conference with one overall win (against the only other 4A team). Back then, they were seeded amongst the other conference champs and hosted a first round game (record 1-10). They were beaten soundly. Soon after, a rule was put into play that required a a certain amount of wins (maybe a .500 record?, can't remember) in order to be seeded amongst the other conference champs in the bracket.

I just gave you a conference that wasn't split and it made real good sense. KM and Ashbrook have no business vying for a playoff spot as two 6A teams playing with 5a teams. They can go play in Charlotte.
Why we have to go to Charlotte? There are enough 6A teams around that west that we can build a conference out of. KM, Ashbrook, Freedom, St. Stephen’s, Alexander Central, and South Caldwell. I will even take KM, Ashbrook, Statesville, Alexander Central, Central Cabarrus, and North Iredell because of the 485 and 321 corridors.

Like I said I was just throwing out a place I knew might have similar numbers. Crest and KM will always play so it does not matter. It was more on who put this crap conference together and nothing towards KM personally

You're idea is fantastic btw.

It's easy to look at the proposed realignment with blinders on, i.e. "This stinks for my school!". But, what people overlook is that any changes in the conference "my school" is in has a domino effect.

I agree, the proposal needs some work, but that's why they do a multi-tiered process with reviews and at least two drafts before a final one.

Must have 2 from same classification in a split to get an automatic bid.

Conference champ or playoff bid would have to be earned by a team that is the only representative for a classification in a split.

AGREE.
At the heart of all this...I don't like the classification breakdown. Looks like the NCHSAA takes into account past performances of programs moreso than actual ADM numbers being close together plus geography/travel for conference affiliation. Everybody acts like EG (70 less students than SP) and SC (35 less) are the size of Cherryville.
You have 3 schools - technically all who are rivals, and all within 8 miles of each other..... they ought to be in the same conference as each other.
The entire West can't be defined by and catered to Watauga and Polk Co. and any other school similarly isolated JUST because they are far away from other schools.

Just playing with the spreadsheet it looks like if there were three classes it would look like this:

3A Myers Park 3317 to Southern Alamance 1218
2A Franklinton 1212 to Draughn 686
1A Pine Lake Prep 685 to NCSD 22

With six classes (which would also be how you could subdivide 3 classes):

6A Myers Park 3317 to DH Conley 1744
5A Garner Magnet 1735 to Southern Alamance 1218
4A Franklinton 1212 to Bandys 909
3A Fred T. Foard 903 to Draughn 686
2A Walkertown 684 to Pamlico 424
1A Murphy 422 to NCSD 22

How many schools in each split for (6) classes?
