Realistically, a season like this gets Fitz fired at a lot of places, right?

It’s not just about the record, it’s about the lack of improvement.

It’s foolish to project how the final three games will go, but there’s a far better chance of a 1-8 conference season than of a 3-6 record. Yuck.

You are spot on. Michigan turned over almost their entire staff last year and Harbag took a pay cut. I doubt either will happen at NU this year.

I'm confused. Did Harbaugh get fired?

This is amongst the silliest threads I've seen on a board known for silly threads.

No. He took a big pay cut and sacked multiple coaches. And his team has improved.

About what?
The team looks terrrrrrrrrrible.

Uh-huh. Team doesn't look good. I don't think it would get a coach fired at anyplace outside of a few places like Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State. It's just silly venting. Just dumb.

No way Jose! Nu is an academic school first and our football 🏈 team is full of exemplary student athletes! The higher ups at NU know football is a fleeting sport! Just don’t get anyone permanently injured! Fitz can go 3-9 for two more years and he still would go down as one of best coaches ever!
Heavy contact Sports are riddled with problems at the highest level! MMA, boxing all come hand in hand with problems! The entire Big Ten is an excellent conference with the vast majority of the players and coaches doing credible things for young men!

Cool story, but a really poor example of how a season below expectations gets the head coach fired.
I don't suggest Fitz should be fired. But there are obliviously problems with assistant coaches that need to be address........

Texas Tech fired a coach at 5-3.
TCU fired a program legend at 3-5.

I don’t think it’s unrealistic.

Maybe then don't say "spot on" to a post that says this would get the head coach fired lots of places.

Defense gave up 17 points to a Top 25 despite the offense turning the ball over 3 times. That feels like a huge step forward to me. You remind me of all the guys who wanted Jerry Brown fired as DB coach and then raved about what a genius he was when the pass rush got better. Bad QB development has been a big problem. Can't throw three interceptions as often as the Cats do.

The Top 25 team that scored 7 points in each of its last two games. Come on, don’t pretend that holding Iowa to 17 points is some sort of impressive feat. It’s what we should have expected.

Sleep it off, bud.
Willie Taggart got fired at FSU after a 4-5 start in his second season.
Kevin Sumlin got fired at TAMU after a 7-5 season.
Tom Herman went 32-18 at Texas and was canned after going 7-3.

A season like this gets lots of coaches new jobs. That’s all. It won’t get Fitz a new job. But he needs a staff shakeup.

I suppose it's how you look at it. 17 points is the third fewest points scored by a team that was #2 in the country 14 days ago. That was by a defense that had averaged giving up 34 points the last four weeks. So, not any incredibly impressive feat, but feels like a big step forward for that defense. The ability to stop the run and give the ball back to the offense for what could have been a game winning drive is a big step forward for that defense.
But, yeah, fire everybody. It's just dumb.

He would be forgotten by everyone, but NU faithful if he has a string of mediocre seasons. The BTN announcers already diss the program weekly one season removed from a West Division title. Also if the higher ups think football is a fleeting sport why the $200+ million sports complex and now the half a billion Ryan is throwing around, in which half or more of that money will be going into stadium renovations. They know CFB is big $$$$$ and that is the administration's job, to increase revenue. A new AD and administration will expect an increase in revenue due to this large investment into the football program. If Fitz can't get the job done after awhile, he will be shown the door. Two division titles in 16 seasons isn't something to hang your hat on.

You prove your own point wrong, bro. What was Willie Taggart's record in the previous season? Kevin Sumlin got fired for multiple seasons that were the same 8-5 mold in a row, not for one season. Tom Herman got fired for going 32-18 at Texas, not for one season.

Sleep it off.

Sometimes, some perspective is needed folks.

We just had our biggest bowl win in 70+ years less than a year ago and finished #10 in both polls; won the division 2 times in the last 3 years. Won 4 straight bowl games in the last 5 years.

Yes this is a bad year; if it repeats next year then it's worth having discussions on serious changes.

If this garbage continues through 2025, yeah the guy(Fitz) needs to go. Too much money has been invested into the program for a long string of mediocre seasons that will kill off the fan base and revenue potential.

This thread is full of terrible and incomparable examples. We are not FSU or Michigan, and we're not in a conference that is about to implode where programs are worried about their existence as a P5 entity. When Vandy, Stanford, and BC start making coaching changes one season removed from our biggest bowl win ever and a division title, let me know.

Will say this...new sheriff in town. Will be interesting to see if Gragg gives Fitz the same blank check to run the program that Phillips and Morty did all these years. Gragg sees dollar signs with this stadium reno, and he knows he isn't going to shake us down for a few extra thou per year at 3-9. Consequently, maybe Fitz doesn't like being told what to do, which has been painfully evident when he acts out at press conferences...and then what?

Last season we played in the Big Ten championship game.

This year we lost some key assistants and players. It sucks, we all know it.

Fitz get paid a lot of money to know what to do. I am sure he will do it.

Talk like this gets "very good" coaches fired in an attempt to hire hot young "can't miss" dynamo's with great records who are thought to be great motivators and recruiters.

So how is PJ Fleck doing these days? Hottest name in coaching two years ago! Scott Frost (Nebraska Alum, superb job at UCF - can't miss hire!)?

Our disappointing season notwithstanding, I don't think there are many places that would fire a head coach who has won two division championships in the last four seasons.

Fitz would most likely be fired at 100% of the other programs. He is the 2nd highest paid coach in the bigten as well and he delivers a comical season.

Fleck was leading the division until their loss yesterday. He won 11 games a couple years ago, and his teams have been consistently good after his first couple of years on campus.

He's fine, not knocking him, but before he went to Minnesota people were talking about him like the next coming of the Bear or something. I'm saying be careful what you wish for when it comes to changing coaches, especially one who has lead NU to two Big Ten Championship games in the last three years (tour years if you can't this year).

I’m with you. Fitz isn’t and shouldn’t go anywhere. History has shown there isn’t a better coach for the gig. But his team sucks on both sides of the ball so it’s not crazy to think that Fitz should be cleaning house among his staff.

Read the post. If this garbage continues through 2025. If it does continue for the next 4 seasons, the program likely is totally kaput, and a change at HC is most likely needed. Seriously, NU has just been gifted just under a billion dollars in the form of a state of the art practice facility and an overly generous donation by Ryan to renovate the stadium complex. I am sure the donors would like a return on their investment at some point. Also going first to almost last and last in your division back to back is not a sign of a stable program. Why is that so damn hard to comprehend?

Donors can give for many different reasons. If money translates to wins and losses there would be no reason to play the game. Just open up the books and give the W.

We have to wait and see what happens.

Fitz and the current staff will try to right the ship this offseason.

Next year there will be people on the hot seat if we look like this again.

Even Bajakian (who I don't think is the problem), has to increase our offensive output.

No reason to speculate out to 2025.

Kinda like politics, there will be two very vocal and polarly different camps with lots of uncommitted and quiet folks in the middle.

If PF turns it around next year, one side will mock the other for their view. But…if PF starts out bad again next year, more and more in the middle will wander over and join the side calling for major change. And the longer PF stumbles, the more vocal they will become as they also mock the other side.

The only thing to be sure of - the side that ends up being correct will certainly be unkind to the side that called it wrong. Because that’s the kind of collective we have become.

(I’m in the middle but ready to jump on w anti PF side next season by game four. Meanwhile, I enjoyed a Saturday night out. Glad I didn’t miss much watch a terrible and boring NU game.)
